Duane @ Magpul has touched briefly on some new announcements coming from the Magpul Camp. If SCAR mags are on the docket, it could mean a big shift in availability. Since you’re probably not going to run out and buy one tomorrow, may be worth keeping an eye on what Magpul’s coming announcements are.
I know that doesn’t really help with the investment in the 20LRs, but the other option is buy one of each.
You could then sell the one you don’t like as much and not take much, if any, of a hit on the rifle and mags.
When did he hint at anything relating to SCAR mags coming from Magpul? They make product announcements periodically, but as I understand it, SCAR17 mags aren’t something they’re considering, based on their previous responses to the topic.
Honestly with FN upping production of SCAR 17 magazines, anyone who puts some effort into finding them can get them @$40-45 each. GB has died down and they are selling there for $40 / each today.
Not as plentiful as an AR mag, but not nearly as hard to find as some people make it out to be…
It’s been decided, as soon as I find a reasonably priced SCAR 17 (2,800-2,900 or less) I’m buying it. Already started buying SCAR mags for it, which are popping up here and there pretty frequently.
I never saw anything specific to SCAR. Duane had mentioned some things to be announced at the next show have been guessed by the public and some have not. I only mentioned it because the OP has time before he’s ready to buy so it may be worth watching just in case a SCAR mag is in the announcement.
It is my understanding that Magpul decided to not make magazines for the SCAR 17, the stock magwell is pretty tight and that means very thin polymer.
I have a handful of Thermold SCAR 17 mags that I bought intending to block them to 5/10 RDS for hunting and the polymer is really thin.
There is another rookie outfit trying to make polymer SCAR 17 mags and has been “selling” them for $69.99… I say selling them because they were supposed to be delivered in Dec, the Jan, then Feb… Then after a photo shoot and initial test run, the mags had to be completely redesigned… Now they are supposed to ship this month…
Even then, the mags are considerably longer than OEM mags, since the smaller magwell and polymer requirements necessitate that the bullets are closer to single stack vice true double stack pattern… Anyway, they are vaporware at best, only time will tell if they deliver and prove reliable / durable.
I think if you want to run Magpul in your SCAR you are better off buying an aftermarket lower that accepts PMAG-LRs, there is one out there now (Handl) and one or two in work (Stryker Enterprises). I’d love a PMAG-LR that fits the SCAR and have thought about an aftermarket lower, but with 18-20rd OEM in hand (paid no more than $41/ea) and a 10-rd OEM on the way, I’m pretty well set for the time being.
I ordered 10 scar mags last week for $45, I’ll wait till I find them for $40 or less to purchase more… Now if I can only find a SCAR 17s for a halfway sane price ($2,800-$2,900 or less) I’ll be good to go.
I think the problem with Magpul making SCAR 17s mags would be that they would have to charge $25-30 a mag to recoup their costs for R&D, and they’re all about quality products for cheap… I think if the cost was $30 a mag then many SCAR 17s owners would just as soon purchase OEM mags.
I regret selling my SCAR H. It was reliable and very accurate. I bought it when they first became available and mags were very expensive. For my needs though, I never needed dozens of mags like I keep for my AR’s. I think I had ten and that never left me wanting.
I never felt limited with the trigger in either of my SCARs. The Geissele is certainly an advantage, but I got by fine with the factory trigger.
Hopefully I’ll buy another within the year, or a PredatOBR. While my 5.56 guns will do everything I need, there’s things I want them to do that they can’t.
Thanks fellas, I bought a black SCAR 17s for $2,750 a few weeks ago, I have 40 OEM mags, 400 rounds of 168gr. Hornady and have it topped off with an EOTech EXPS 3-0 for which I’ll either buy a magnifier (G33) or scrap the EOTech in favor of an ACOG with offset aimpoint micro. While I haven’t shot the rifle yet (waiting for some sanely priced range ammo to rack up on) I’m very happy I made the decision to go with the 17s.
Just bought a DDM4V1 LW, now I’m looking to replace the AK I sold recently (ADM-65) but don’t know much about what AK is considered quality. Also thinking about picking up a SCAR 16s but I’m trying to figure out if it’s really with the price tag and while I know LWRC isn’t popular on this forum, I’ve been toying with the idea of an M6-SL for a piston gun, kinda like the idea of another lightweight rifle (which the 16s is not, at least compared to how the 17s stacks up to the AR-10 platform in weight).
