There is only $129 difference between the dealer cost on the 16S and 17S. So that price is high to me. Luckily for you, you know a new FN Dealer. 
The CQC won’t be available to Civy’s. FN is going to make short barrels for the SCAR’s and the PS90’s and allow people to buy them and then FORM 1 the guns themselves.

Assuming the CQC won’t come out, can the original 17S barrel be cut and threaded, or is the profile too thin?
i think i remember variablebinary saying that it was “not recommended.” maybe not exact words, but pretty much along those lines.
Alabama repealing the state ban on SBRs is going to cost me more money than I initially planned…:eek:
My concern would be the gas port size in relation to the barrel length. So you might need to open it as you cut the barrel down.

Here is my understanding.
All SCAR barrels have the exact same size gas port. However, FN inserts a gas plug to regulate flow.
If you hack the barrel, and bull the plug out, you might have this large gas port, that allows a cut barrel to cycle, but you have no idea if you beating the internals of the SCAR to death.
Not a good idea with a $2600 gun IMHO
Also, if you botch the hack, you will never be able to replace the barrel, because FN wont sell you one.

The only reason I got a SCAR was so it can be SBR’ed and FN isnt playing nice in this regard.
My SCAR is perilously close to being traded for an ACR or SR15 if it cant be SBR’ed so any additional info would be appreciated.
An SBR’ed 17S would be off the scale awesome.
I really wanted a 17S until FN started getting hinky about selling parts. I decided to go with the LMT instead because I can work on it, I can get spare parts, and the magazines are not proprietary (i.e., I can get PMags.)
Oh, well.
Plus SBRing the LMT will be a snap, and LMT has already said they will be selling short barrels.
Will 20 round PMAG’s work in the SCAR? Quietshootr just made me think a little bit harder. Logisitics is definitely an issue for me and I may look at the LMT .308 gun.
As other’s have pointed out…even if I had the dough and was in the market for another 7.62x51mm rifle right now…how and where would I get spare parts when you can’t even find them for the 5.56 model and that’s been out quit awhile now.
It’s just not feasable yet for my needs.
Nope, they won’t. It’s a proprietary SCAR-H mag.
SCAR-H mags are proprietary and based on the FAL.
