Eotech is not for my application for what I want from the rifle, sucks they don’t hold up though.
I did not experience it personally, but when I was having issues I posted a thread and several users reported issues with in a year for tubular scopes.
One user had a Leopold fail and another had a S&B.
The one user that appeared to have high miles and no issue was using elcan.
Once again, I’m not saying a elcan will survive or the other scopes will fail. I’m just passing along the info they shared with me.
Damn, Leupold and S&B had failure That’s some high end glass.
My IOR Valdata 1.5-8x26 has help up thus far, around 2500 out of the 3K or so I have on my 17.
It’s built like a Romanian Peasant woman though, thick and heavy. Been dropped a couple of times, has held zero fine, passed the box test last time I zeroed it in for MK319 SOST and figured corrections for 145/147gr FMJs.
As a former Navy Tacair guy, I equate it to onset rate, kind of like G onset rate in a plane. Recoil overall is lower than other 308 semis I’ve shot (especially considering how light the weapon is) but that recoil comes on quick.
Hear about this every now and then on FN Forums. This was a rumor that predated the 17S being released, and originally was credited to the 16s. Generally, the answer lies in sub-par optics. Willing to admit that’s not always the case, but in general, I think it’s over blown. Never had any failures with anything on either of my SCARs (besides an EOTech that loved to turn itself off, not uncommon for EOTechs on any weapon). Seems that the vast majority of SCAR owners have found the same.
I rank this one right up there with a story an “operator” told me that while firing from under a vehicle a piece of brass bounced into one of the heat vents on the front of the SCAR, and caused a malfunction. In case you’re wondering, that’s not actually possible, as the brass is too big to fit.
Yes, it’s very quick and abrupt, just that the shooter doesn’t feel it.
What mount has your IOR been riding in?
Possible, but when you have TNVC stating publicly they do not suggest mounting their thermal or laser products on them there has to be a history of something happening. The comments I made above is only about tubular, this issue is not just related to Eotech there is a long history of other red dot/holo optics failing. A Zeiss being one of them.
I was told that the Aimpoint M4 was built like a tank and should suffice. That is what I have on my 17, but I don’t have a shit-ton of rounds downrange either.
That’s the kicker, I have my own range so rounds, rounds, and more rounds are inevitable. Good to hear of the Aimpoint working for you so far
Just a sample of one but I have run a TA33 and a Nightforce NXS 2.5x10x24 on my SCAR17 since 2011 without problems. Over 3000 rounds total.
I run an Elcan on my Scar 17 and have not had any issues to date.
The reputation comes from electro-optics. A SCAR will eat a clip on and leave it dead.
So are illuminated reticles something to be more concerned with in a scope? Or just holding zero, both?
I am definitely taking into consideration what all you guys are NOT having issues with and have higher round counts and adjusting my search accordingly.
ADM-Recon mount.
The recoil impulse is different. I initially had the mount reversed to put the locking levers on the right side, so they faced forward. On two separate occasions, the SCAR 17 rocked the levers beyond 90degrees, to include unlocking them. The first time I wrote it off as a one time occurrence, but both levers had done this. The second time was eye opening as I was coming up from low ready and the scope was falling off the rifle (I caught it).
Since then I have flipped the levers so they point rearward and make sure they are extra tight. Hasn’t happened since.
That is good to know, I have looked at the same mount and was wanting to run the levers on right side, opposite of my charging handle.
This x 10 I am a huge fan ADM’s, plus use an angled charging handle. I like the GG&G and IWC, the EACH has a following (even though Jim Elmazi is off my Christmas card list).
GG&G with mount levers on left side is the way I’ll go it looks
That seems to be the winning combo.
Elcan is for sure a proven winner, just not sure if I care for the reticle choices, that’s just me.
If Elcan had a few more reticle options that would be ideal
