I’m putting together a new upper with either a 10.5" or 11.5" barrel and was wondering what handguards/rails I should look at? I have a BCM KMR keymod upper and like it a lot, especially with it being lightweight.
I’m thinking about giving M-Lok a try this year. The design looks simple and there should remain ample accessories for a long while since MagPul is behind it.
Any suggestions for something lightweight in the 9 to 11" range?
Just a quick note if you end up with a KMR. A 10" KMR on a 10.5 inch barrel will not allow you to mount a suppressor as the muzzle device is slightly inside the upper receiver. I am not sure about on an 11.5 inch barrel as my 10" KMR currently rests on a 12" larue barrel and it looks as if the 11.5 would work, but I would see if someone else can test it for you if you plan on using a suppressor.
I’m in the same boat (11.5" build) and have been looking at options. My requirements are the longest rail possible with M-Lok and ability to mount an AAC suppressor, so you may have more options depending on need. Currently narrowed it down to the 10.5" Midwest SSM M-Lok and 10" SLR Solo Ultra Lite M-Lok.
I recently picked up an 11.5" upper and had a difficult time finding a handguard. I didn’t want keymod, but if I did the BCM KMR looks perfect because the 10" is actually 10.5". The Centurion CMR is my favorite handguard, but it’s only available in 9.5 and 11. By my measurements 11 is too long for a can and I think 9.5 is too short. I don’t think the Geissele MK 4 or 8 is available in 10.5. I ended up ordering a MI SS M-Lok 10.5. It would’ve been an easier decision but I’m not completely sold on the barrel nut. I wish it had a cross bolt that would prevent it from sliding forward like other rails.
For 11.5s, the KMR 10 and also the URX 3.1 are good choices for getting close to the muzzle device with plenty of clearance for a suppressor. But with Mlok, it’s pretty limited at the moment.
ALG EMR V1 and V2 are both M-Lok and come in 10" lengths. Handled them at SHOT and they are both lightweight and pretty cheap. Sub $150 retail from what i was told.
As Boone posted earlier, this won’t work. Barrel length is measured to the tip of the muzzle, but muzzle devices thread back to the barrel shoulder which is around .65" less than stated barrel length. From experience, that won’t work with a Surefire can.
Your rail needs to be at least .7" shorter than the stated barrel length.
Muzzle device also makes a difference. I believe all SOCOM ones have a gap between the rear of the device and the start of the shoulder on the muzzle device, giving you an extra 0.2" of clearance or so. If you’re going with a legacy can and mount you have to be more careful. The old brake does not have this gap so you lose that extra space and this could be the difference between the suppressor collar tightening all the way. Older FH556-212 and MB556-212 SB mounts do have this gap.
It’s the same issue no matter what. With a setup that tight getting the muzzle device installed with be a chore, as you won’t be able to get to the wrench flats easily. And the can definitely won’t mount. You need more clearance.
I gave it a try with a 10.5" Noveske after talking with Larue to get the dimensions. I knew it was going to be real close and in the end it was just a little too long for my setup, probably 1/16".
