I am currently running a 6920 with the factory stock. At 6’5"/280#, and being a civvy (i.e., not wearing a vest) - I run the stock at full extension most of the time.
My problem is that my stock weld places my beard right at the slip-joint on the collapsible stock - and it bites! Pulls beard hair on a regular basis. For a few hours, it’s not really much of a problem - keeps me alert! OTOH - I’m headin off to a 3 day carbine course in April, and I’d rather not come back with half of my beard missing. (I’m ugly enough as is.)
I’m slowly working my way through some ideas I’ve had (duct tape sleeve, collar made from split foam insulation for plumbing pipes, etc.) - but thought I’d run this past the listers here. Although I couldn’t find any solution with the Search function, others must have gone before me and encountered this problem. Any suggestions? (No - shaving isn’t a high-value option. I got drunk one New Years Eve several decades back and shaved it off - the first time my wife had ever seen me without it. The first three words out of her mouth were - “GROW IT BACK!” And I am basically happy with the stock otherwise and would prefer to keep it.
Have run into the same issue and just did a quick fix with good old duct tape. Your idea about thin pipe insulation may work but I’d look for the thinnest stuff possible and maybe make some type of a shield tou could attach with velcro so it could be pulled off/put back on as needed. Maybe an old sock or shirt that could be stretched around the end of the stock then pulled down to cover the area where the “bite” is??
This is too weird. I was just reading Book of the AR-15 magazine and was reading about MagPuls new products and they were saying how the Magpul UBR stock saved the hair on your face from being yanked out. Then I come here and am finally able to log on and I see this post first.
When someone asks about the Vltor EMOD I tell them to be very careful. The stock is so comfortable if you are behind it for a lenghth of time you may just fall asleep. It is by far more comfortable than the Gen I or the UBR’s that I have.
Gonna do the Gunsite 3 day class in Lebanon, IN in April. I’m new to this carbine stuff:) Mostly a pistolero for the last few decades. Had a retinal detachment with the associated laser surgery, and it left me with only partial vision in my dominant (right) eye. Needless to say - my iron-sighted pistol shooting ain’t what it used to be. As it turns out - I can “see” the target with my left eye, and see enough of an Aimpoint dot with the right eye to maybe make things work with the carbine. It certainly forces me to shoot with both eyes open!!!
So - I’ll give it a shot (pun intended) in April and let you all know how it goes. (Some here are headed for geezerhood and possible vision changes, too:) Will let you know the final outcome on the beard thing, too:)
Of course I’m just kidding so please don’t hit me… I’ll just bleed on ya!
Duct tape works pretty darn good and when it wears out remove old and replace with new.
I did finally shave my ugly mug cause the beard pulling was getting old…
I need to grow it back though because when I look in the mirror I scare myself:
Who dat?.. oh… damn… it’s me.
Take a bicycle tube from a mountain bike and cut a 2 inch section out of it, then slip it over the buffer tube and then put the stock back on, position the bycicle tube so that it covers the gap.
Was looking into the bicycle tube concept combined with the duct tape idea, i.e., didn’t want to mess with taking off the stock, nor anything sticky near the beard:)
My solution - “Vet Wrap”. Those with horses know what I’m talking about. It’s elastic and somehow sticks to itself without being nasty like velcro, or sticky like duct tape. A couple of wraps around the joint where the stock collapses and, Voila! - a painless solution. Will give it a try at the Gunsite class next week and see how often it needs replacing.
LOL :Dthis is great but you’re problem does not compare to using an FN-TPS (Tactical Police Shotgun) with the standard M4 stock on it. When that 12g pump with 3 in Mags grabs your beard on recoil you cuss, cry, cuss not necessarily in that order:eek:
I see a UBR in my future someday, but am trying out the Vltor Mod Stock that came on my N4 for now. I’ll NEVER use a collapsable on a shotgun again:o
Just try a fixed A1 stock. They are available in modern materials from Cav Arms if you are worried about breakage, or want one in color. Using a full length buffer system also can buy you some reliability - some Xm177s were modified thus in VN. The rifle buffer weight is very close to the 9mm buffer, plus you have the added volume of the longer tube.
Frankly, I just like the feel of it more than a collapsible. I would have a hard time going back now. If I had to wear body armor, I might have to go with the LMT SOPMOD, which by all accounts is an excellent stock. I too have a beard, but I guarantee you won’t get it caught in a fixed A1. (same length as your fully extended current stock.) I’m 5’6" and it works great for me. FWIW I just picked up a used RAS cheap for my SHTF carbine, so I’m not a total luddite. Seriously, try an A1 length stock and you’ll see what I mean…or not. You give up about 3" to a collapsed Type 2 stock. It’s worth it to me feel wise, and the weapon length is still viable in a vehicle. Seems like low-tech maybe, but I hate the A2 length stocks and love the A1 length, and they are only 5/8" in difference. Just my .02
