Looks like its about $550 w/ local FFL transfer fee from Buds. Strictly looking for a cheap (but reliable/accurate) hunting rifle. Pretty set on 308 as I’ve already got this caliber and have dies, bullets, etc.
Anyone have experience with the Savage? I want a rifle that will be able to hit the vital area of a deer consistently to about 300 yards. That’s it. This rifle won’t see more than 3 boxes of ammo a year.
I don’t want to waste my money on something if there is a better deal, or this tends to fall apart after a few rounds due to recoil however.
I hunted with a box stock Trophy Hunter .30-06 for a couple years, ProStaff and junk mounts included. It’s reliable, accurate, and if ever you do decide you want to change anything on it, the aftermarket is there and you can do it all at home. I have several hundred rounds though that particular .30-06, nothing has broke.
I will say, the trigger guard being polymer feels cheap, but mine took some nasty hits in the mtns, and, gouges aside, it was fine.
Personally, I like Savage for a lot of applications. Yours is one of them.
Two years ago, my brother bought one of those in 243 for my nephew’s first deer rifle.
I actually went with him to the range to sight it in…so I actually put many of the first shots through the Savage.
I was shocked at how good that trigger was and how accurate this little rifle turned out to be. We literally took it out of the box, bore-sighted it and started running Winchester Power Points through the gun from the 100yd bench. The rifle turned in many groups well under 2" - amazing seeing it was new out of the box and shooting lower grade factory ammo.
The thing was totally “minute of whitetail” right out of the box.
I am sure we could have gotten some 1" or smaller groups, had we bought some Federal Premiums or better factory ammo but my nephew took some nice deer and pigs with this rifle in the last 2 years.
I was amazed at what he got for about 500 bucks. I think you will be happy with the rifle.
I purchased that rifle (.308) about two years ago from Bass Pro on sale for $329-349, don’t recall, less than $400 OTD. Hunted twice with it and killed 3 boars on first occasion, two the second time I took it out. Great accurate gun for the price, its my sole hunting rifle, get some extra mags, they were hard to find for some reason. Now just shoot quarter size holes in paper at 100 - 150 yds.
You’ll like it. Don’t expect to be wowed the same way you’d be with a Kimber, Sako, or Weatherby… the 11 TH will feel about like a $500 rifle… but they’re functional, accurate, and utilize a great barrel and action.
I looked through the glass. Wow. I pointed it out the window at a sign about 250 yards away and it was crystal clear. Very impressed with the optic considering it comes “free” on a $550 rifle. I’d pay about $200 for that scope.
Anyway, they only had lefties and a few 270s. I really want 308 but I almost bought the 270 on the spot.
I’ll keep looking for a 308, but worst case scenario I’ll buy one online. Either way I’m getting one.
Was it a Nikon or a Weaver? I know the Axises come with Weavers now, but not sure on the 11’s. The Nikon that came on mine is still ticking after a few years of abuse and a lot of rounds (for a hunting rifle, anyway). And it should go without saying, but check and make sure the rings and bases are tight whenever you do grab one.
The one my brother bought had a Nikon 3x9x40mm scope already installed. It was very workable. No…it was not a Zeiss or even as good as my Leupold but totally use-able.
I was totally impressed at what that package did from the bench at that price.
I have only one hunting rifle now after all these years.
Purchased a Weatherby Vanguard S2 in .308 when they first came out.
Installed the Vanguard Tally mounts and my old Leupold VX1 3x9.
Shot some hand loads where all 10 shots went into just at over an inch at 100 yards.
I quit looking for anything else.
