Sandpaper and triggers

I’m sure all you sexperts will say “duh!” but though I’m no rookie to AR operation, I am, for the first time, getting into the technicals of function and customization. The current fucked up situation with which I find myself living in, for the moment, requires that I find something to occupy my mind during down time, or I shall go insane. So I’m spending money I would have previously thought ridiculous, and learning how to do more than hit targets.

My gay two-stage LMT

I was in Portland for a business meeting a month or two back and stopped in a gun store I remembered getting good service at years ago. I noticed they had some LMT lowers in stock. I shouldered one, covered the hammer, squeezed the trigger, felt a real short, sort of crunchy, fairly heavy (for a 2S) takeup followed by a distinctive secondary, with a very crisp letoff… i said, “two stage, huh?” Not impressed. He said, “I think so,” and asked the other guy who said, “No, they’re all standard.” I looked inside, surely looked single.

I bought it. I love LMT- hated the trigger. Bought a RRA 2s to replace it, but didn’t ever put it in… the LMT was perfectly functional, as an ass-backward 2S, but I still hated it. Figured I’d just break it in. It didn’t. After hundreds of cycles it still caught. Not a real big deal, but the little catch wasn’t a great end to a heavy takeup.

Going stir crazy today, I took the trigger group out. Looked over the contacts, looking for burrs… none… all looks good. LMT polishes their contacts, everything was smooth and shiny, rubbed from operation. Unacceptable.

Popped in the RRA NM… gravelly takeup, sort of a harsh letoff… as can be expected; all the contacts are parkerized. So i took it out, grabbed some 240 grit, and started polishing.

Polished the hammer trigger and sear contacts on both hammers, as well as the trigger hammer contact and sear contacts. Polished off all the park on the RRA, polished the LMT till it was just ever so slightly rounded, went back to the RRA and slightly rounded those contacts as well.

Popped in the RRA, all the gravel is gone, the semi-harsh letoff is gone. Real smooth, real crisp.

Popped it out, put in the LMT… smooth, short, surprise letoff. Not only is it better, it’s basically perfect. Very nice trigger.

20 minutes and some 240 grit, and now I don’t know which one to keep in there. And now I’m back to having nothing to do but read about and spend more money ordering parts, or post more dumb comments here.

Balls.

I did a DPMS style trigger/hammer for my RRA 9MM that I ramped my bolt on with a few careful passes of 600 grit, and it made a night and day difference in the trigger. Still kind of long, and still a bit heavy, but nice and smooth with no grit or jumping forward.

How’s the trigger affected by the bolt?

Nevermind. The lightest I had was 240. i probably would have used a lighter grit, out of caution, but I wasn’t about to wait, once the idea struck. The 240 worked fine, and helped round things over a tiny bit, which I think contributed to my pleasing results.

How’s the trigger affected by the bolt?
Nothing, just a side note. I changed the hammer because I ramped the bolt, then did the work on the trigger hammer set.

yea, i figured it out after i posted
