This is the extreme of the variance found within a single box of RA40T. I found three different bullets. Most deviated toward the thin hollow cavity wall type. A few had thick walls. Maybe 10 had the extreme thick walls. Maybe this explains why some penetrate deeper than others and why some expand more and penetrate less.
I havn’t looked into the Rangers,but my brother showed up today with some 9mm HST’s. I noticed a rather pronounced difference in the appearance of the HP cavity.The ones he had seemed to have more of a taper in the hollow point and it didn’t look as deep to the naked eye as the ones I have been getting. Both were 147 gr.
I have a load coming in Monday UPS. I don’t know quite what to make of the change and am wondering if some re-testing would be in order. Maybe DocGKR can provide some insight.

The ammo (HST) came today. I checked a lot of the boxes.
What I have is boxes that are mixed with the nose style I have been accustomed to along with what appears to be a bunch with the shallower HP caviity. Both styles in the same box.
The newer ones also appear to be more circumferentially rounded at the nose. Definitely a change. I think some testing is in order to see if this slight change makes a difference in the performance characteristics,either negatively or positively.
Maybe I’m too fussy,but that’s just me.
I’ve seen mixed JHP ogives in Rem. Golden Sabers (9mm 147gr) myself.
Ditto on the Sabers.I saw that a few years ago myself. Perhaps I’m a little too OCD about it.Every time see a similar change I can’t help but think of DocGKR’s comment about some of the .45 Rangers being hit with dull punches,causing expansion problems.
I’ve experienced that too.Maybe I need to take a chill pill.
