On facebook, I liked their page and enjoy seeing pictures they post. But oddly they blocked me after asking a curious question. Makes me laugh about their company now and how childish they act…
I asked about the reasoning on fluting their pistol barrels. To me, I find it very costly to flute a pistol barrel for little to no improvement in performance/accuracy. In all their facebook posts, they always state that their barrels are match fitted and fluted. But what is the reasoning on fluting the barrel? What is the cost to flute a pistol barrel and does it out weigh the cost? Or is it just a marketing hype and people pay to have cool looking pistols?
Sadly they blocked me after asking and am still curious on why they flute their pistol barrels…
Realistically speaking you could flute a barrel and mill a slide to tune its weight to that of the recoil spring resulting in a very fast cycling slide with minimal sight lift.
The reality behind this is that most if not all pistols mechanically cycle faster than a human can press a trigger.
Their work is cosmetic in nature and i HIGHLY doubt they actually put any engineering into their “designs”.
Yes, that’s what I was looking for. But in order to “tune” the pistol like that, I would suspect you would need the shooter to be present so that you can “tune” the pistol for his specific need…which in turn would be costly.
Again, I was asking out of curiosity…but their pistols are pretty looking and I can appreciate the cosmetic aspect of their pistols. And I do really like the mag release recess they do to their Glocks.
I have yet to see them make a single claim of a specific performance improvement, what their guns group at a given number of yards, etc. I think it’s pretty telling that they don’t make claims like that, as then they would have to back them up. In the end, they’re nice looking guns, and that’s about it. Most shooters can’t even extract all of the performance out of a box stock gun anyways, probably because too many are focused on flashy bullshit as opposed to honing basic mechanics.
We should start referring to SAI guns as “pimp gats”. LOL
Wasn’t it Boresight or Cold Bore Customs that started that?
Either way, you can get that done without going to Salient.
I don’t understand why companies have such a problem saying “Because it looks cool”. There doesn’t HAVE to be a performance benefit for every modification.
I highly doubt a single customer of Salient Arms bought one of their pistols because they were looking for a fluted barrel or slide cuts to fix something in their shooting.
Down here in South Florida without fail, every week, there is someone with a new, very expensive Limited pistol with more bling on it than some gang bangers mouth.
Nine times out of ten…they suck and the only thing they are good at is making noise. You hear nine out of ten of these people talking, incessantly, about their new pistol and how it shoots laser beams and unicorn shit.
The pistols look like they are set up to kill Lycans on an Underworld movie set. I feel that changing a bunch of things on a pistol shouldn’t be necessary, desirable, or encouraged.
When I was young it was my dream as an entrepreneur to create a product that had absolutely zero utility, yet people thought was indispensable to their daily lives.
Corporate. Motivational. Speaker. Your dream lives and is within reach!
I’ve got no personal problem with someone offering a cosmetic service. It reminds me of the hand cut swirly engraving done on custom old west firearms. If you like it, fine.
What I do have a problem with is someone marketing it as somehow improving performance.
Is it so hard to sell something on its own merits without resorting to dishonest marketing?
The Tactical world is full of smoke and mirrors. More so now than ever before as it becomes more commercialized. We are living in an age of commercialized training where the modern Snake Oil salesman lives and breathes by his ability to sell you the intangible.
Costa is NOT one of these guys but…yeah, im not going to go any further as i personally think some of his recent forays are a little weird…
Also, have you guys ever seen Costa run these guns? I can’t tell any difference when he’s shooting a Salient vs. Stock which makes me think it’s all pretty much looks rather than performance.
