Something about airsoft was mentioned in an article that I read relating to this vest.
The first thing that comes to mind? Airsoft type operations.
Apparently you are correct. These pattern vests are of an old design and are not seen as much anymore. HSGI used to make one that was of a similar pattern. The airsoft crowd uses knock off versions of the original vest.
That is a copy of the south african pat 83 battle jacket, developed in 1983. Quite revolutionary at the time, was very popular with British SAS.
It can take a lot of kit, mags, grenades, bandages, waterbottles, poncho. I’ll have a look for more detailed pictures.
