I have a 2 month old SW 15A and the take down pin is a real pain in the butt. It is very tough to remove, so much in fact that I can’t even remove it unless I use a piece of brass and a small hammer. If you take it apart you can see where it seems to be rubbing at the top of the lug on the lower, like the holes aren’t perfectly aligned. Is this something I should deal with (nothing to worry about) or should I contact SW?
No worries, in my limited experience. My M&P-15 had the same problem at first when I bought it new in 2006, so if it’s still going on I suppose they must mean to make it that way. I guess S&W is trying to keep the halves tight so they don’t feel rattly and cheap in the gunshop. Over time, and with a lot of lube, the pin wore in just a teeny bit and eventually I didn’t need the mallet and punch to get it out. You have good gear there, just give it time.
The pins wear in as they are used. There is a small plastic take down tool that Brownells sells that is cheap and will make it weasy for you.
The rear takedown pin on mine is fine on my S&W. The front one can take a little bit of force, but I’ve never needed a punch.
Thanks guys, I won’t worry about it then.
