Since I was already leaning towards the topic of rust in my previous thread, I did a quick search but couldnt find a thread on treatments so I thought Id start one and hopefully get some inputs from those of you with more experience, for those like myself, with less.
Let’s narrow things down a bit to medium - near heavy rust and into 2 categories.
On visible parts like on the barrel or BCG
In hard to reach areas, between the HG Cap and FSB, on the barrel nut etc…
It helps to let it soak overnight as well. If it’s a hard case, let it soak, wipe off and reapply and let soak some more. If need be, use(with very light pressure) a brass toothbrush. Bore solvent will remove any residue from the brush.
Now–how to keep this from happening?
From my experience, people are afraid of oil on thier weapons. Speaking of the outside, I would rather have some dust build up vs. rust. When done shooting --and cleaning, take a moment to drip a drop around the fsb, on both “top sides” so when in storage, it will seep around and under the fsb. I usually wipe down the outer portion of any steel component/part with the wet patch that was run through the bore-even if chrome lined. If it’s a work gun, disregard the bore thing and do normal cleaning on it. In storage, I do a light coat on the BCG and add more before shooting.
I don’t wipe off anything on the outside, it’ll burn off.
I don’t buy the “I only clean it every 5k, etc, etc” Do you wipe and clean your tail after every trip to the pool? or do you wait a month? --rust/rash:rolleyes:
col,
you need some weaponshield.
attack the rust with a brush.
then scrub the rust with hot water and detergent
dry real good then scrub with isopropyl alcohol 91%
dry real good again, then apply weaponshield.
apply weaponshield a few more times in the next few days
and you will notice a blackish tint where the rust was.
its not rust anymore.
Thanks everyone! I used to use WD40. Tried it on surface rust on a barrel and a bit on a FCG. Funny, rust came right off the FCG and took quite a bit on the barrel.
Ill keep your suggestions in mind but hopefully Ill never have to use them.
I came accross this post from a past thread on outer surface protection. http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=19270&highlight=paraffin
Has anyone ever tried spraying/applying anything of this sort to their FCG for a bit of rust protection?
Im looking to do this with mine and some rifles in storage with a bike chain wax spray – indicated to contain paraffin.
On that note, are there any chemicals to look out for that might be damaging to composite and wood stock surfaces?
