Looking at getting a RRA 223 Pistol, not many reviews that I can find and the search is not working for me, maybe it does not like google chrome. So can anyone give me any feedback on the 10.5" pistol?
RRA has a poor enough rep with full-length rifles and carbines, I wouldn’t dare risk seeing their take on a short-barrel mechanism.
I’m already picturing an overgassed 10.5" with a CAR buffer cringe
If I were building an AR pistol or SBR, I wouldn’t buy from anyone besides the usual top tier makers: Colt, Noveske, BCM, DD, maybe LMT or Spikes
What about CMMG?
What about CMMG?
Might be a little better, might be a little worse, still no where near good enough. Besides, compare the cost of a CMMG or RRA to a BCM, DD, or Spikes build. Much better guns for little to no extra $$$.
do they build ar pistols or would I have to assemble it myself? What is required to build one? I mean as far a NC pistol permits, etc.
You could buy something like this
And have it shipped to your closest FFL. Then buy the upper of your choice online, such as this one from Spikes. And then just pop the take down and pivot pin and put them together. Easy peasy.
yeah I saw that, wondering if it is cheaper to get a complete unit from them
wondering if it is cheaper to get a complete unit from them
It’s NEVER cheaper to buy a complete gun, as all complete guns are subject to a 10% Federal Excise Tax (whereas seperated lowers and uppers are not).
Why pay Uncle Sam an extra 10% just to have the pins pushed in for you?
So I am looking at the Spikes complete pistol lower with their concussion 7.5 short barrel upper. Any thoughts? Are the anti rotation pins needed? They are in stock so I may be placing an order later this week.
Anti-rotation pins are absolutely NOT necessary, see this recent discussion on the subject for more info.
You’ve chosen a seriously nice pistol upper that should yield VERY impressive accuracy with that barrel.
An important note before you proceed:
.223 ballistic performance out of sub-10" barrels is dismal. If your intention is to use this in a defensive or hunting capacity, you should seriously consider staying above that 10" threshold.
If you want something that’s just really effin’ cool for shits and giggles - rock on, you’ve planned a great rig. ![]()
AR pistols are just generally a bad idea all the way around.
The main reason is that the companies that produce them, use cheap parts which in turn makes them un-reliable.
If you are just looking for a toy to shoot dirt with, have at it. If you want a serious use weapon for training, home defense, etc, buy a registered SBR from Colt, LMT or form 1 a lower and buy a quality upper and BCG (again from LMT, BCM, Colt, etc).

ChicagoTex gave some great pointers on a build that should work just fine. I have to agree with him on the 10" or longer barrel and think you should consider it for your build. Let us know what you plan to use this for and maybe we can add some more suggestions.

I have a decent carbine length weapon. The pistol lengths look fun to play with and that will be the majority of its time, just having fun at the range. If accuracy is only good out to 50 yards I am fine with that. If it reaches 100 yards then awesome.
So mostly just fun and the gee wiz factor at the range, as a concealed just in case weapon in the back of the jeep. I have other home defense weapons to go to first like a good ole shotgun with buck shot.
As far as getting a registered SBR, I have this personal thing against telling uncle sam what I have and also letting my life be open to his inspection if he so chooses. Also NC is hard to get SBRs and any NFA items from what I have read, especially in Durham and Wake county. Neither sheriff will sign off on them. Trusts are suspect and most attorneys I have talked to say they would not hold up. So the only true way to get one is with a corporation and I do not have one of those at the moment.
I understand the intricacies and nuances involved as to the why’s.
Use QUALITY components, full length tube, good buffer/spring etc. you will be more than satisfied. The ONLY thing not on it when done this way is the stock.
Range toy. Good place for AR pistols.

SG with slugs huh. How many rounds to train with your go to HD weapon? More than your pistol or AR? Live in an apartment or house with close neighbors? Got kids in the same house? Might want to re-think your HD choice.

Do you believe that the Govt doesn’t know you have weapons? Please save the tin foil hat stuff for another forum. And no, the man cannot come in and search your house because you have an NFA weapon.
NC is just fine with NFA weapons. Your local CLEO might not be. Luckily, there is a thing called a TRUST and no they are NOT suspect. We do tons of the with our local customers. ![]()
Most of your decisions are based off incorrect info. Might want to re-think some things.

There is nothing wrong with what you want to do with this pistol build and your expectations are more than reasonable. As with most things there are those that are for and those that are against the AR pistol. If you stick with quality components it will function just fine and you will be able to see how well you like a short barrelled weapon. Then if you choose to, file to make an SBR out of it later. If you decide that you don’t want the pistol any more you can even sell the short barrelled upper and then build it as a rifle, but remember once it is built as a rifle it can’t be changed back to a pistol. Once a rifle always a rifle.

Never said slugs, I said buck shot, I am well aware of penetration issues in a home, and I have a single family home.
I have spoken to a lawyer that deals with trusts and I know I can get an NFA with a trust but that lawyer also said that the AG in NC could at any point come down on NFA items bought with a trust as the NC law is clear that it is a Corp and the trust is a gray area that I would not want to be in.
The ATF is not supposed to know what guns I buy. The paperwork filled out is not sent to them but kept on record. The only way the legally can ever know what you purchased that is non-NFA is if they trace a serial number through a manufacturer to the dealer that sold it and then to the purchaser.
But then again I did not ask or care if you think an AR pistol is worth while so keep your editorials and thoughts to yourself. I asked about reputable builds and that is the only information I wanted to take your comments and stick them.
You are correct. BS. Same over pentration issue.

Sure. The Govt can change their mind at any time and say “all bets are off.” If we just lived in this “what if” world, we would never get anything done or venture outside.

Sure. Do you think they really don’t though? As an FFL dealer having gone through an audit AND know what forms I have to fill out on multiple pistol purchases, they know. The other way they know is by looking at what NONE firearm items you purchase. No one buys ammo, cleaning supplies, training, etc if they don’t have a gun. ![]()

Uhm maybe you should re-read your first post. You asked for feedback. You got it. Don’t ask questions that you don’t want REAL answers too.
NO RRA doesn’t make good AR’s. NO, none of the AR pistol’s made are all that good. NO an AR pistol is NOT a good idea. Yes we all think they are a range toy/novelty item.

The AR platform does not magically become a toy if you decide to build it as a pistol. It is just as capable as a SBR using the same cartridge and barrel length. While follow up shots may be a little slower with the pistol, it is acceptable for me as I am a low speed high drag kind of shooter by most peoples standards. The biggest thing is to train with it, learn what works and what problems arise that need to be addressed the same as any firearm.
These forums are a good source of info, some may be good some bad, you have to make that decision.
