Rowing for Cardio

I have not done any rowing like you see on the Charles River or near Princeton or any of those other snobby places. I have used a rowing machine, though, and it is an outstanding workout…as hard as any rowing I did on a zodiac or CRRC. Given this time of year, with a rake, I am reminded of how good those workouts were.

Rowing is a great workout. You are correct in that it works all aspects of your body.

You are now starting to see more rowing machines in the gym than previous. Maybe because it is part of CF workouts now.

Why not go swimming instead of using rowing machine …

Weg111 - where are you rowing?

I’m down in Palmetto. It is something I have wanted to try.

I use a Concept 2 rower at the gym. I find rowing nearly ideal because it is low impact and easy to maintain whatever HR I desire.

I row in the machine and love the workout. Never have on the water.

Rowing is real deal exercise. True total body workout.

I wish i either had a row machine or scull boat thingy (dont have a clue what they’re called)

I haven’t had as good of a workout since I quit rowing in an 8-man boat. Erging may be just as good of a workout, but for me it’s worse than running on a treadmill. Rowing is much more therapeutic when you’re on the water at dawn.

Now that my joints have been exposed to almost every form of punishment from the military, I have become more sensible with my PT program.

Where I used to focus everything cardio around running and pounding the pavement, at 205lbs thats less than ideal. I now incorporate more low impact methods of cardio to maintain and increase O2 efficiency.

One routine that I perform on a weekly basis is called ‘your morning coffee’. It consists of a combination of running and rowing.

Here it is:

b 3 mile run - Time: 18-26 minutes or better.
[/b] (2-mins rest/set up for the rower. Max resistance)
b 500 meter row - Time: < 2:00 mins + Stroke rate < 20
[/b] (2-mins rest)
b 500 meter row - Time: < 2:00 mins + Stroke rate < 20
[/b] (2 mins rest)
b 500 meter row - Time: < 2:00 mins + Stroke rate < 20
[/b] (2 mins rest)
b 500 meter row - Time: < 2:00 mins + Stroke rate < 20
[/b] (Finish)

Try it and let me know how you go!

Does kayaking count ?

Maybe I should call it double shot of espresso!
