Round type free float handguards?

Which one?

I have looked at several models but which one is do you guys recommend? I understand the VTAC/JP Enterprise model is a bit dated but why? How about the PRI or DD? Others?

I just installed a Samson Evolution 12.37" on my BCM 16" middy. Pretty easy to install, uses the stock barrel nut. Light weight, comfortable grip. Solid all around. Does a little hot when you start hammering mags, got almost uncomfortable after 60 rounds today, but I wasn’t wearing gloves like I normally do. I recommend it fully. Matter of fact, I got turned on to it by the forum here.

I’ve not used the JP Vtac but in handling a rifle with them it felt heavy; not unduly so and could probably be offset with a heavier stock.

I have one rifle with a Mid West Industries SS12. I like the main top rail with rail sections I can place where I want them. I usually only use a TLR-1 at the 12 o’clock position.

I got another upper that came with a VTAC TRX 13 and I love it for the same reasons as the MI SS12 plus it has a smaller diameter and seems much lighter (haven’t weighed them though) and the rifle is a great deal more responsive with a livelier feel.

I’ll replace the MI SS12 with a VTAC TRX if that tells you anything.

I don’t have any experience with the others you mentioned other than having shot one of Pat Rogers carbines with a Daniel Defense hand guard for one relay. The weight or lack of didn’t really jump out at me as the rifle seemed really well balanced but I don’t really care for the bulk in my hand of a 4 rail.

I also have no need for a 4 rail hand guard. I have 3 rifles set up very similar and they all have a TLR-1 at the 12 o’clock position.
This includes the rifle I carry on duty.

Hope that helps.

I’m planning on using one of these from Apex Machining Co. on my next build- 6.8spc.

I have two Midwest Industry SS15’s on my rifles. One of them is a mid length gas system. I love the tube design. I feel it is more comfortable then the quad rail systems. I like the modularity as well. I went witht he MI tube since it provided the longest top rail section at the time. 15" is a lot of rail!!! :dirol:

The weight of the rifle is comparable to that of a quad rail, maybe a hair bit lighter.

My rifle weighs in a little over 10lbs with aimpoint compm2, hybrid Vtac padded sling, Vltor modstock, and SF G2 light on a vtac mount.

I just put put the Vltor a5 system on it, so it may have added a little weight since.

I have troy rails and love them

Low Pro gas block or FSP? How long?

I was in the same dilemma but wanted a longer rail for a carbine length gas system and didn’t want to replace the FSP. The JP rail with the extension is the only 12" option I could find.

FWIW, after a month of looking, I ended up with the Omega X FSP:rolleyes:. Couldn’t beat the price ($200) and because of its thin profile I don’t mind its a quad rail.

Otherwise this looked interesting and had got some good reviews:

What ever happened with this rail?

There’s Apex too and they do have some FSP models, although they don’t stick out past the FSP.
