As firearms instructor at my agency, I have recently been tasked with setting up parameters for a precision rifleman position. One of our officers is interested and prefers to use either a .270 or 300 win mag. Any advice as to ammo selection? While we probably won’t be taking any more then 100 yd shots, we are in the mountains of Appalachia and winds can be a problem. Our city is a mix of urban and rural areas, thus the rounds we select would have to be somewhat versatile for both short and long ranges with good terminal characteristics as well. The officer is a accomplished hunter and is a practiced shot. His preference is for the two above calibers due to his hunting experiances. My idea is if we can use his privately owned rifles, we can save money used for buying equipment and spend more on training ammo and quality duty rounds.
Also, any advice on qual courses we could use would be appreciated.
