Ever play it? I first played it in middle school (late 70’s), then again when I was in the Army.
You can be a real prick to someone in that game! I saw grown men (well, 19-21yo GI’s) almost come to blows over that game on Tiger Island, Honduras. Other than stand guard duty in the bunkers there was nothing else to do so Risk was among our amusements.
“You said you wouldn’t attack me this time around if I helped you out during your last turn! WTF?”
“Fvck, you, I lied…”
Dudes stand up, across the table from each other, all puffed-up until one of the other players (a Sergeant) says “Both of you at ease that shit and sit down”.
Longer story shorter, friends of ours are coming over tomorrow night and the wife bought a Risk game. Haven’t played it in almost 4 decades but it looks like the manual states there is a “shorter” version you can play. My buddy is an Army vet from ancient times also so this—and some beer—should prove interesting.
That would be good if there is. I never could play any kind of long form board games- including Risk when I was growing up. About halfway through I would get tired of playing and would start taking huge risks (pun intended) to either end the game in a blaze of glory or get quickly defeated. Either way I was good with it.
I’ve played a few times, and a buddy loves the games. I’ve enjoyed watching younger player figure out risk vs reward and learn what a pyrrhic victory is.
In college, someone had a version on their Mac computer. One of the old single unit, monochrome versions for reference. Helped with cheating. IIRC, the best strategy was to try to stay out of the way in like Austriala or South America, and hope the others exhausted themselves.
Never get stuck in a land war in Asia seemed to be true in the game, a movie, and real life.
RISK is really one of the great board games. Empires can collapse more quickly than can be imagined. It can turn lifelong friends into bitter enemies. And, as mentioned, people still get themselves into land wars in Asia.
