Ring height for new scope

Have a 2x10x42 30mm tube Viper coming. Unfortunately, my sack of old rings are all one inch. What height ring do I need to mount this scope on a flat top ar-15? A2 stock, no backup irons to worry about if that matters…

Most standard height mounts put the centerline of the scope ~1.5" above the rail. Find diagrams of the rings you’re looking at. Or buy an ADM/Badger/Geissele/etc mount.

Thanks. Had a Leup 4.5x14x40 (1 in) varmint on this un with 2pc rings but can’t remember height. I guess half of 42 mm would dictate .827 in to centerline (with no clearance). Just wondering how that would translate to m, h or xh. Have no numerical idea what too low/high is for cheek weld/forward-rearward positioning or charging handle manipulation. I have an ADM with a Viper 1x6 but have no idea what the height is… Maybe the real (as in dang expensive) local gun store will have what I need. Just don’t want to wait on rings if they aren’t in stock locally. I want to shoot it next weekend!

Depending on the scope and mount, you may be able to get away with some individual rings at 1.25”. I’ve been messing with that setup recently for a precision-ish setup.

But standard is 1.42-1.54.

Yeah. I had been reasonably happy with the height of the Sig 1x10 that was on it. I got off my butt with a tape measure and it was in the solar system with 1.5in. Ordered same. Trade offs with higher lower (forward/rearward mounting, vaiying degrees of cheek weld, etc.). With the old scope, 2 rings mounted evenly further apart than what (little) I’ve seen on cantilever mounts, but I’ll go cantilever if I have to. The kicker is that with 2 rings, the scope becomes an old school carry handle!
