Does anyone here use a right index finger mag release for their handgun? Left handed shooters that I have talked to use their index finger on a standard handgun with the mag release behind the trigger guard, and most seem to like it that way. I got to thinking about it when I picked up a Beretta Neos 22 to use in our clubs rimfire pistol matches. It has a mag release forward of the trigger on the right side. Since the AR platform is the same way, I am thinking of swapping out the mag release on my M&P 40 to the right side to maintain that consistency. Not having to shift my firing grip is one other advantage I can think of, the down side being the chance of accidentally dropping the mag when I don’t want to. The M&P is a completely new platform for me so I don’t have any habits to break yet, and I don’t have problems swapping mags on my 1911. Are there any holes in my thinking? I am not formally trained yet, so any information is welcome.
I would agree that not moving your firing hand is a good thing. I don’t know about using your index finger.
I fire right handed and have been taught to use my left thumb. It works.
I think the risk of inadvertently dropping the mag out weighs the possible benifits.
I still have to alter my master grip to hit the mag release with the index finger. Almost in the same manner I do if I use my thumb.
If you are worried about consistency between the AR and a handgun you would have to mount the mag release by the forward edge of the trigger guard where your finger would lay if its not on the trigger.

I don’t think attempting to achieve commonality between a rifle and a handgun is even a worthwhile goal. Both are very different platforms and require a different set of skills. Learn both.
