Rifle #3 - Addax/Noveske 14.5"

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from toting a POF-415 to our first two PA/OH/WV Group Exercises, it’s that, I DON’T want to to tote it to a third!!! It’s MORE than accurate enough, but standing around with a rifle 4lbs heavier than everyone ELSE’S… on a single-point sling… gets old in short order!

I didn’t have my M&P15T sighted-in in time for May, and I still didn’t have this project completed yet either, but now that I do, it’s time to show off.

It started, when I got a S&W complete lower (NOT a factory build) last fall. I decided I didn’t like that combo eventually (a poor aftermarket LPK someone had installed soured me on that lower - it was a Gunbroker pig-in-a-poke ‘special’), but I did want a custom-built upper - REGARDLESS who’s lower I eventually settled on.

Having heard good things about Chris at Addax in Los Angeles, I dropped him a line in late March, and we started reviewing what I was looking for, and what route we’d take. I wanted to build as LIGHT a rifle as possible, without going the SBR route (just not ready to cross that bridge yet). I also didn’t want to skimp on quality ingredients, either.

So we began with a Sabre bbl - government profile, chrome-lined. I wanted a mid-length gas system, for reliability. A Vltor low-profile gas block starts the ‘circulatory system,’ as it were.

I was looking at a Daniel Defense upper for a while, but Chris pointed out that we could go Vltor for only a little more. Finally I said, “You only live once - let’s do it!” So a MUR-1A it is!

The upper came together rather quickly… except for the DD Lite 12.0 rails. DD’s been backed up on EVERYTHING of late (which I would discover when I went looking at lowers!). Thankfully, Chris knew WHO to call over there, and managed to snag A set of rails for my upper. Test firing for fit and function proved excellent, so it shipped the end of April, and hit my doorstep the first of May! My apologies ahead of time - my photo-fu is weak. Stickman I ain’t. :frowning:

Grant contributed MANY ‘peripherals’ to this build, not the least of which was the BCM F/A BCG. Charger is a #4 medium Vltor/BCM Gunfighter from Addax.

14.5" bbl means a pinned Phantom Comp in this case. I realize the Phantom Comp is practically ‘old school’ NOW, what with all the variety of FH’s and muzzle brakes available today. Thing is - I’ve NEVER had one on one of my rifles before! So this is my first, and it DOES look sharp!

WHAT to do then… for a LOWER? I dumped my S&W (had a commercial tube and stock, too), so now I had a world-class upper… and NO lower.

I put in a call to Kevin Johnson of Johnson Tactical LLC here in Pittsburgh. There are a number of fun shops here in da’ 'BURGH, but finding a GOOD stripped lower on-the-shelf, is nigh-well impossible. We kicked around the merits of forged vs. billet for a while, and settled on “forged.” Specifically, a Daniel Defense lower, which would probably look pretty ‘spiffy’ with my DD rails. Only problem was - no DD lowers to be had! :frowning: 2 weeks drag by, and finally he suggests a Noveske - for the same price. Well slap my ass and call me Sally - THAT wasn’t a hard decision to make! One more week, and my NEW Noveske N4 stripped lower arrived.

NOW… we are in bidness!

Having learned my LESSON from crappy LPK’s, Grant likewise was contacted for one of HIS LPK’s - to make sure this thing went together WELL! He also provided the H-buffer, MOE stock & trigger guard, Aimpoint T-1/American Defense mount pckg., and AFG, just to round everything out. The trigger is a RRA 2-stage. I know - it DESERVES a Gieselle. I’m getting there… :stuck_out_tongue:

MOE grip was a leftover from the original S&W lower, as was the carbine spring. I wanted some KNS pins on this project, because I’m not sure how hard this is gonna hammer with an H buffer, F/A BCG & CARBINE spring, but I figured - better safe than sorry with the anti-roll pins. Vltor offset light mount houses an Insight Hx120 Proxima which - sadly - has been discontinued from production by Insight. :frowning: Figured I’d want the strobe on my primary ‘housegun.’

TROY BUIS were acquired here on M4C, and the TacticalLink single-point sling and Z360 mount came off my POF (I’ve since gone to a PWS enhanced buffer tube and 2-pt. sling on THAT rifle!) and the lower was assembled Saturday! And here she is!

I haven’t weighed it yet, but after hoofing that POF around at two get-together’s so far, it doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to KNOW the difference when you sling into it!

I plan on hitting the range EXTENSIVELY over the Independence Day weekend, and see how she runs!

Looks fantastic! Have fun at the range…
