REVIEW: Gen 2 Rauch Tactical VZ58 Buttstock Adapter

Rauch Tactical was kind enough to send me his newest version of his M4/AR15 Stock Adapter for the VZ58/CZ858 Series of rifles. I have been using his 1st Generation of stock adapters since last year and have been impressed with the quality. I had given the designer some input into both Gen 1 and after using Gen 1, suggestions for the Gen 2, so I was looking forward to it’s release @ SHOT Show 2010.

Fit and Finish
Fit is tight and exact, the way quality firearms parts should be. Finish is a black hard anodized.

Construction
6061-T6 Aluminum.

The threaded adapter cup is much thicker than the Gen 1 version. Thread pitch is also better to reduce likely hood of the machine screws stripping if you were to mortar the stock while clearing a stoppage.

Installation
Remove old adapter plate. Put new one on, bolts on like any other rear plate with a single bolt. Threaded adapter cup attaches with two machine screws at one of 4 heights depending on your application. Those running iron sights will prefer a lower setting, while using optics will necessitate using of the higher two. I am using the 2nd highest setting to accommodate my Aimpoint H-1 Micro on PRI front gas cover.

I mounted a milspec buffer tube and LMT SOPMOD stock, the same setup I had on the Gen 1 adapter.

Design
-Sturdier construction
-Sling loops on both sides. I moved my Vickers sling to the sling plate to give it a whirl, normally I run the rear of my sling through the stock or on an ASAP plate.
-4 settings vs. 2 settings. Obviously this will accommodate more end user’s setups. I had been using the lower setting on the Gen 1 combined with a riser made of rubber stereo insulation. The 2nd highest setting of the new adapter is the perfect height for me with no riser.
-Inline (Rauch Tactical) vs. Angled (Stormwerkz and other companies). I prefer a stock inline to the bore, rather than having the recoil coming at an angle.

Conclusion
RT has done it again with a great product at a very affordable price. I would recommend the product to anyone looking to upgrade their Gen 1 or put an AR15 stock on their VZ/CZ. :smiley:

That is one sweet looking setup you’ve got there. As a new VZ-58 owner, your post answered pretty much all of my questions on how to modernize it.

So far, I like it better than any Kalashnikov or SKS.

Rauch tactical’s website is horrible though. Very hard to read (color scheme) and the photo quality of their goods is subpar…:frowning:

Looks like a nice setup. What GT is the H1 mounted on? I have a CZ “Tactical” version that I am considering replicating my SA M7 setup to some extent. Are my eyes deceiving me or is it an ambi charging setup?

The H-1 is mounted on a PRI top rail.

I have a dual cocking handle setup that I had custom made by Colorado Shooting Sports. I sent down a bolt carrier and asked them to put AK handles at 90 degrees to the bore on both sides. It came back with another VZ handle on the left side…not exactly what I asked for but the general idea…

Rauch is coming out with a version of what I asked for but you can choose to have left/right/both sides attached as the handles will thread into the carrier. Apparently it’s a few months away.

Have you considered mounting an NEA rail? Your VZ is bad ass btw.

The two improvements the NEA rail have over the PRI is make it removable to clean and allow cowitness with irons. Obviously those are both good features. However I dont clean my VZ, so I dont care about the removable feature, and I wont be carrying the VZ is some locale that will have me peeing my pants if my optic goes down... Its purely a range toy for me. Even if I was running this setup overseas I trust the Micro series enough that the cowitness would not be a concern for me.

If NEA were to send me one for testing Id gladly run it, but at this point the cost wouldnt be justified for me.

Right now I`m looking forward to the quad rail systems coming out from both Canadian companies.

I have a rauchtactical unit on the way for my favorite 7.62x39 rifle. I think it will get a UBR.

My favorite rifle has one of these rauchtactical adaptors on the way. I tried the stormworkz one, and while it worked (with a bit of filing for my OOW VZ 2000 receiver) it just put the cheek rest up to high. I had no interest in the model that put the stock at a downward angle.

One of the best features about the VZ rifles is the light weight. Now that I am bolting stuff on this one (and making it heavier!) I need to order one to keep bone stock.

What type pf rail does your VZ have? Looks like the B&T offering. Price?

It is the B&T rail. I acquired it from a friend who had a couple extra. He does not have any more. It is a very solid mount, and it puts the T1 right where I would want it.

Couple questions… Is there a GT rail like a UM that will allow any co with the Rauch peep? I would love to add the SOPMOD, peep, and a T1 on a GT that allows a co … Is this viable?

There’s a company called North Eastern Arms who make a stock adapter with a pic rail on top, which sits in line with their handguard rail.

The adapter allows for an inline AR stock, and the handguard is very nice.

NorthEasternArms will be distributed in the US as TROY stuff, I believe.

NEA’s rail will allow cowitness with irons. RT will have to chime in and let us know if his quad rail will, I have not played with it yet.

Thank you. I think I will do an all black version myself, SOPMOD and all. It just looks like a solid setup especially since I was going to do work on the black CZ with the crazy stock. In fairness it is somewhat comfortable, but I just cant get past it. The inline connection to the rifle looks very appealing with this setup.

Stupid question is the NEA rail as easy to install as the UM’s are?
