Repinning a Barrel ???

Does anyone have any experience with taking a Noveske pinned bbl and switching to an adjustable gas block by repinning it? I have an 18" NST bbl and want to run JP low mass system.I called Noveske they would not do it for me. I can’t think of a way to be accurate enough. I do have machine shop access, with quality measuring tools.

I’ve seen it done but it is faaaar from ideal. I didnt ask how they managed it but I assume the most difficult part was lining things up. Once you do, I suppose you could then ream it and use the appropriate-sized pin.

Why don’t you just run a clamp on block? GH

I’ll probably have to. It’s a 3-gun gun gun and I like the “Set it and Forget it” factor of pinning.

Just re-pin it in a different location? Should be able to measure and mark it in a safe spot.

Until the next time you want to change something! It’s not like your life depends on how the gas block is mounted. If you were concerned about getting killed you probably wouldn’t be doing the low mass system. GH

That’s a good Idea, thanks.

From what I understand, it’s possible to pin it in the same spot, but you’ll have to ream the new block to match the pin grooves already in the barrel, then you’ll be custom fitting gas block pins.

At least, that’s the right way to do it.

On a side note, noveske put their name on the syrac adjustable gas block so that may be a factory option meow…

I’m not a gunsmith, but I’ve been told that it’s not optimal. I’ve always been curious if the pin holes could be filled. Welded, brazed? And then re-drilled. In any case, if it were my rifle I’d buy a clamping gas block or a gas block that can be attached with a single pin in a different location. Daniel Defense has clamping GB that “looks” like it might work well.

It could probably be done, but is also probably not worth trying or paying someone to do it. I would simply make sure the barrel has two good dimples (BRDE dimple fixture) and use two knurled tip set screws and the appropriate strength Loctite (whatever BCM uses). It isn’t coming off with the set screws and Loctite.

For the cost, risk, effort, time and potential hassle, why not just pull out your checkbook and buy a replacement barrel with an adjustable block on it?

You can’t be saving that much money, replacing a block instead of replacing a barrel, that all this is worth the effort.

Thanks everyone for your input. I’m afraid of drilling a second hole. I’m afraid of misalignment of the first, so I’ve decided to go with a clamp on Syrac and call it good. BTW the barrel is brand new. At 460.00 I wouldn’t be able to replace it anytime soon. Dan.
