I was reading through the -23&P the other day and noticed where Devcon putty was called out for minor repairs to uppers and lowers. I have always hated these big gaudy logos all the mfg’s put on their receivers so I decided to take a shot at removing them.
I got a tube of Devcon putty from Auto Zone and went to work. I filled in the logo (and the “gator grip” while I was at it), sanded it smooth with 150 grit and scotchbrite, and re-coated with KG GunKote. I was filing down a tight magwell and was re-coating anyway so I thought I’d give it a shot. It came out real well. Looks very mil-spec.
Looks good. I really don’t see where logos are worth removing, but it doesn’t bother me that someone takes their’s off either. Good for you, I wouldn’t do it, but it came out great, perhaps close ups if you feel inclined?
I personally hate the logos, especially on AR’s. They use the only space available for engraving. I understand why they do it, just don’t like it. Besides it’s hard to look cool instructing with my Bush Master when all the Students have Colts, LMT…etc:D
I guess thats why we have assesorizing…
Well, I guess it’s a personal thang. I just never liked all these goofy logos on my piece. When I saw what they were doing over at arfcom to retro A-1 builds I thought, hey, that’s interesting. They were welding over the logos for a more mil-spec look. Then I saw that mention of Devcon in the pub and thought Hmmm.
It may be a little thing, but it’s a little thing I’ve put up with for damn-near 30 years. I like the fact that my rifle now resembles the one I was issued a long time ago. I’m also notorious for taking tags off my gear as well. I’m weird that way.
Some buds and I used to do the collectible motorcycle thing, and we once viz-modded a Honda 350 (two cylinder type) into a fictional Brit bike. It’s AMAZING how many so-called “experts” were able to tell us the exact history of the bike and the company that made it back in the 1950s and 1960s.
My rifles are pretty much all CMT parts, so I’d eventually like a CMT/Stag lower (or two) but never liked the big stag horn logo. Might as well put Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck on there.
Who left the door open? Maybe if we just ignore him he’ll go away.
Joking.
Some people here have definately not outgrown high-school lunch table cliques. Not picking you out in particular MarkM – you’re much more just plain 'ol curmudgeon. But this place quite often likes to remind itself that it’s not TOS, is better than TOS, can’t believe how childish they are over there (at the TOS lunch table). Then someone here starts a thread asking, “Hey, is the arfcom server down?”
I was certainly surprised by the reaction to this this post. I thought it was an interesting experiment and I thought I’d share my results with the community. Obviously some think it has value, others don’t. But I would suggest that you don’t post anything that you wouldn’t say to a man’s face. I don’t hide behind a keyboard, I will be at the SHOT Show this year if anyone wants to talk this shit to my face.
All I have to say is that if you don’t have your rifle in the fight right now, then everything you are doing with your rifle is hobbyshop bullshit. Before you laugh at me or anyone else at arfcom or whatever, take a good look in the mirror.
Hawkeye thanks for sticking up for me. You know I appreciate it.
BTW, the magwell came out great. I posted results in the magwell problem thread.
On a serious note this is a good idea, I like it, Companies that use simple logos or text are ok by me but when they start getting into cartoonish type stuff it bothers the hell out of me, doesn’t me an they have a bad product they just need to fire their marketing dept.
