I just want it all out of my system. No nicotine gum, no tobacco alternative, just be done with it.
So I’ve completed day one of ninety on P90X3. This is my first P90X and so far I like the workout. Variants of push-up, pull-up, squat, and core muscle exercises in a compact 30 minutes.
What ever ends up working best for you, but you had asked for suggestions. Nicotine itself is not all that problematic per se and even has some potential benefits in some populations (1), and it’s all the other nasty stuff that comes along with it, that’s the major issue it appears. Not that I’m recommending non users of nicotine consider jumping on using it, but there may be a balance struck for those who do.
This is correct. Nicotine in moderation is no bigger a health risk than a Big Mac in moderation. Burning the tobacco, as in smoking, comes along with a wide variety of nasty shit, including nitrosamines, aromatic hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide, in the most efficient delivery system possible. Snuff/dip is bad because the tobacco is cooked before packaging, therefore contains those same carcinogenic nitrosamines and hydrocarbons. The reason Snus is supposedly safer is that it’s steamed rather than burned, therefore doesn’t contain those things.
Whether or not the observed increased overall mortality and the similarly sized, statistically nonsignificant excess of cardiovascular deaths can be attributed to snus use warrants further studies. Experimental data in both animals26–28 and humans29–31 have demonstrated that nicotine and smokeless tobacco, including Swedish moist snus32, 33 raise blood pressure and pulse rate, albeit the results are ambiguous as regards the risk of chronic hypertension. Two Swedish cohort studies indicated an approximately 40% excess risk of death10 or incidence34 from cardiovascular disease. Additional Swedish case-control data suggest that the excess of myocardial infarction might be confined to fatal cases,35, 36 in line with animal data showing an increased propensity for cardiac arrhythmias37 and an increased size of experimentally induced myocardial infarctions after exposure to nicotine.38, 39 Previous epidemiological data on the risk of fatal cardiovascular disease, however, have been inconsistent, and the positive findings did not attain statistical significance.
For balance, I should point out that those same carcinogenic nitrosamines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are also a large component of the hamburgers that we cook on the grill. And standing there supervising those burgers gives you a hefty shot of carbon monoxide for good measure.
Acceptable to whom? Personally I avoid the obviously stupid stuff like smoking but I’m not going to worry about cooking on my Big Green Egg. Other people may draw that line at a different point.
I think there is a larger amount of carcinogen in our environment today. OTOH, I also think that we will solve most cancers within the next couple of decades and will also put a serious dent in the aging process. If only we could effectively combat mutating viruses and avoid killing ourselves off with resistant bacteria. IMHO, that’s the main danger humanity faces these days. That, and space rocks and supervolcanoes.
Here is my story. I dipped Copenhagen for 37 years. I started when I was 8 years old at a family reunion and I quit when I was 45. I quit cold turkey on July 25th 2013 and I have not had one craving. I never even think about Copenhagen anymore. To me it is the nastiest substance on the planet. Something else happened to me on July 25th 2013 as well. I had a heart attack that almost killed me.
Here I sit today, six months later, a healthy person. Since I quit dipping I have gone from 184 lbs to 163 lbs. I eat better and go to the gym 5 to 6 days a week. It’s true Copenhagen will kill you and it’s not always by cancer. Dipping is worse than smoking with heart health.
