I recently got a Bell and Carlson stock for my 700 SPS tactical to replace the Hogue stock. Upon putting the rifle back together, I noticed that the magazine floor plate won’t close properly. It looks like the stock itself is either interfering with it or it’s too “tight” of a fit. It’s definitely the right B&C stock for the rifle though. Has anyone come across an issue like this? Any suggestions as to what the culprit may be and how to fix it is much appreciated.
Does the floor plate not close and click at all? Or is it an issue where there’s more or less spacing between the stock and the floor plate hinge than you’re expecting?
Make sure you didn’t reverse part #30 in the schematic which is the “Magazine, BDL grade”. Also, make sure you haven’t knocked that part out of alignment within the BDL, and that it’s not hung up against a portion of the stock.
The “mag body” for lack of a better term is tricky to get back in. You have to kinda squeeze it and put it into position at the same time.
I’m not a bolt gun wrencher, so I’m probably making guy cringe… but I’ve had to wiggle that piece in when ever I’ve pulled the action out of the stock.
I’ll try that, however it feels like my mag body isn’t that tight of a fit into the receiver
The floor plate does not close and click when I put the two screws back in tightly. What I had to do was loosen then up until the floor plate does close, then tighten them again. Probably doing it wrong.
I Googled a 700 BDL schematic and I’m thinking that I put the magazine in right. It looks like the “flat” end of the magazine goes on the bottom, and that the narrower end of the magazine faces the front, so I’m pretty sure I got that right. I’ll take it apart and put it back together again tonight to see if I did anything wrong.
This most likely is the cause have had it happen to me. In addition with action in the stock and the action screws snug but lightly torqued. Bump the stock on the ground a couple of times to have everything seat before applying the final torque.
It might not be your issue… but if you look at the spine on the “mag body”, it’s split… and it’ll squeeze together to pop into position.
… or your stock could be boned.
It’s not like B&C has a remarkable reputation for quality control.
I might be putting it back wrong then. Will take a look. Thanks for the tip.
The best way I have come up with for putting a BDL back together is like this:
Set the action on the counter upside down on the scope rail.
Snap the magazine body into the action.
Carefully lower the stock on to the trigger and magazine body, being sure not to disturb the magazine.
After the stock is all the way on the action, check that the magazine is centered in the stock’s inletting.
IF IT IS NOT CENTERED, rotate the stock about the action to center it.
DO NOT simply move the magazine.
Now lower the bottom metal into the stock with the trap door released.
Once it seats, you SHOULD be able to move the mag body ever so slightly.
If the mag body will not wiggle, something is binding.
Install and touch-down the action screws.
Push the barreled action rearward in the stock.
Snug front screw to 20 inch-lbs.
Snug rear screw to 20 inch-lbs.
Tighten front screw to 40 inch-lbs.
Tighten rear screw to 30 inch-lbs.
