I decided to start a Remington 700 .308 build, and wanted to start a thread to detail the progress of the build. I started out with a new Rem 700 SPS Tactical .308 AAC-SD model. As most, if not all of you know, this model comes from the factory with a 20" Threaded, 1:10 Twist, Varmint Contour Barrel, and a Hogue stock. I opted for the AAC-SD model, over the regular SPS Tactical, for the threaded barrel. It was only $50 extra, and will make things easier when it comes time to add a suppressor.
I have a similar build nearing completion. Although I kept the NF scope and rings of of the FN SPR I sold, and used a Larue 20MOA base. All that is left is for Rifle Dynamics to finish inletting the HS stock for my CDI bottom metal that takes AI mags.
I even have the AAC 762SD with me awaiting the rifle!!!
What do you like about the 1/12 My LMT is 1/10. My rem 700 is 11.25. And I have looked around at various guns in 308. It seems to depend on barrel length and who knows what else for their decision.
Why do you like 1/12? Why do others like 1/12. Marks gun shoots almost exactly like mine and his is the SPS. Only thing that makes his better is the " puller"
How is the blast from the brakeout? I shot my buddy’s 20 inch RRA 308 with a JP brake and from behind the trigger [with soft ear plugs] it was pretty bad.
The coolest thing ever was these dudes with Mcmillan guns we shot with a few weeks back. They had these brakes on them that would cool you off if you were shooting next to them… Not like that annoying blast… but a burst of wind on you. It was the weirdest feeling.
AAC makes 2 Brakes and one vortex like muzzle device
1 BRAKE, Double chamber Brake, VERY LOUD with no can
2 Brakeout, half brake and half flash hider (which doesnt work) but is a happy medium for a decent brake that isnt too loud.
Yeah… I got rid of mine. It just had a softer butt pad than the HS precisions do… That was the nice part when you get into shooting 40 plus rounds in a session.
Other than the soft butt pad, the stock wasn’t gonna cut it.
The SWFA SS 3-9x42mm came in and its awesome. Very high quality for the money. I’ve spent a good bit of time behind the Leupold Mk4 MR/T 2.5-8x36mm and I’d say that this scope is every bit as good. With that said, I’ve posted it on the EE for anyone interested. I have decided to use the SWFA 10x42mm HD on this build instead. I’ll be posting pics of it shortly.
The SWFA SS 10x42mm HD scope came in and it is Awesome! I was able to get it for $500 on GunBroker with Butler Creek Caps, Sun Shade, ARD, & SWFA 30mm Rings! I won’t be using the rings on this build though. I’ll get pics posted up just as soon as my Seekins Rings get here.
Not in that case it isn’t. I’ve not had a single 308 in 1:12 that would shoot sub loads better than a 1:10. Also, when going to 18", I’ve not had a 1:12 shoot better than 1:10. With the longer barrel lengths I’ve not found a distinction, but when you get down to 20" or shorter, the 1:10 seems to win most of the time, but it can be kind of hard to draw a distinction and it does take time. Granted, I’m shooting 175-208gr bullets as well. Different recipe’s may vary.
… yet I’ve not found anyone able to prove to me that a 1:12 is superior to a 1:10, while the reverse argument can be easily made. ---- The 155 scenar, palma, and several other designs prove my point. The longer the bullet, the greater the twist required to stabilize. Ergo - 1:10 is required for the 155’s to retain stability at ranges beyond 1000yds in most cases.
Now this is shooting, so there are on certainties. I’m just conveying my own experiences as it pertains to twist.
