Thanks, I have a buddy that does a great job of putting in pillars and glass bedding. If I end up keeping this stock I am quite sure Roger will get to perform his majic on it.

$58 rings on a 700 SPS are overkill???
that is the biggest thing about a Precision/DM rifle. The gun it’s self is just the tool, the bank is in the glass. Budget your build with a optic that is about as much as the rifle, or more, and pay once!

Yeah, good rings are important, but I think what he meant by overkill wasn’t necessarily price, but rather durability…I think the integral base/rings like Talley lightweights are very cool, and they’re only $45. A couple other companies now make ‘em, like Remington and Redhead (sp? saw that “budget” brand at Bass Pro Shop…also make boots). For repeated pounding though, yeah, overkill is just right (Wilderness’ motto, the belt guys).
go with the r700 ss r-5 milspec! its worth the difference in accuracy from a stock barrel!
His choice of rings are fine. I just meant that there was nothing wrong with them. “Over-kill” as in “more than good enough” unless you are jumping out of airplanes.
As in “even Burris Zee rings are good enough”. For the most part, if the blow to the scope is enough to move well-tightened steel rings on a Weaver base out of alignment, the scope is probably going to be toast, first.
Separate matter - I like Burris rings, mounts and optic products. They are a lot of product for the money. They compete well with Leupold’s products (in the same price range - not the high end Leupold scopes).
Not bad all around. Here’s mine:

Rifle: 700 SPS-V (traded a shotgun for it straight away)
Stock: B&C (came with the rifle)
Floor Plate: Badger M5
Base & Rings: EGW 20 MOA w/ Medium rings
Scope: Leupold Mk4 LR/T 4.5-14x40 w/ TMR reticle from Custom Shop ($900)
Bi-Pod: Harris 6-9" BRM-S
Brake: Surefire
Stock Bag: SKD Tactical BALS
This whole thing sits for just over $2k. Granted the rifle was “free” but for value, I think it’s a great build.

Just get the scope you want. You could spend the $1500 on a nighforce, but is it what you need? Well, maybe, but the money would be spent better other places at this point in your shooting life. But I cant say that without offering a little advice. If you can save a few more days/weeks/months to get into the $500 range there are a lot more options. But ifyou dont plan to use mils, dont need variable power, and dont plan to shoot at dawn/dusk with low fading light then you can save money. My long range stick has a older nikon monarch 5.5-16x44 on it, no rangning reticle, but great glass, and drop dead repeatability on all the dials. it was $500ish wen I got it, and I didnt ever think I would wnt mil dots. Now I do. But I can range accurately out to 500 or so, and the only shooting I do past that is known distance. Some people however demand that you have a USO on your 10/22 cause I beleive that they think it will make them shoot better. It doesnt. But it can make them more consistent. As long as you get a scope that doesnt shift poi on you, ever, yo are ok. Is the USO/Nightforce/vortex worth it? yeah. Do you need it? Probley not. But the guys who bet there lives on it do. And for some, thats all the justification required.
Replace that junk stock ASAP. then fire about 500rnd an see what you think you need.
