Got some pulled 62 gr. XM855(SS109) rounds for reloading. I’m running mixed brass, and H335 powder. What is a good powder charge for this combination. Loading for training, plinking, ammo storage, SHTF. Any recommendation for primers for this as well?
I have not loaded any 62 grn for awhile, but this will get ya in the ball park !!! I load around 23.5/24.4 for my 55 grn !! Thats using AA2230 though, but I have used H335 and its very close to the same charges/weights !!
Too bad the economy and me being in college isn’t giving me a choice. I can load with what I have now and come out with a good bit of change than going to my local rip me off sporting goods store.
Thanks for the link, Scoutguy; however the ball park is mixed. I have a Speer book and have used the data with good results, but I’m broadening the horizon.
Seriously, I would NOT “replicate” this, I would only come close. H335 is the same/similar to WC 844. Start with 23.5 grains and work up. Use/barrow a chrono and watch for signs of pressure.
From the Army’s Technical Manual TM 43-0001-27 Section 10-19:
Powder: WC 844 26.1 gr
OAL: 2.26”
Load – 26.1 grains
3,025 ft/s, 78 ft from muzzle
Pressure: 55,000 psi
The primer that will be closest/equivalent will be CCI #41.
Hey Man,glad to help out !!! I know how the College days are, even though it was a long time ago,I know all to well about the $$$ part !!! The Speer Manual should serve you well, most any of the Major Loading books are GTG !!! If ya can scrape up some extra cash, get the Hornady Book, lots of good info & loads for “Gas Guns” in there,AR/M1/M-14,etc !!! I think the Link I sent ya should work pretty good for ya also, lots of great info, and best part is its “FREE”
I agree with n517rv,don’t use the Load as Listed in his post, that is a hot one for sure,it probably would be OK,but why push it,I load a full Grain or more “LESS” than that & my Rifle shoot & functions perfect with it,I have a Chrono, but just never messed with it,Hmmm, one of these days !! If you check your brass, look at your primers and check the case necks and watch for Case Separation, you will be good, & on top of that,if you load safe & reasonable loads, your Brass should hold up fine and last through several cycles !! Just keep it separated by Number of “reloads” !
As far as Reloads for HD/SHTF,yes & no,SHTF maybe,HD,BIG NO :fie: Its a big drawn out bunch of shit & you will get a bunch of guys saying, yes,no,its OK,etc, but there are Cases,(LAW Stuff) with reloads, etc,& its a big cluster fuck, save your $$ & buy a couple boxs of Hornady TAP,or other quality ammo, shoot some to make sure it functions your rifle and check POI compared to other ammo you use and go from there, keep your one mag or two loaded/marked with the Good stuff and keep it aside & you should be good !!
As far as SHTF,I think if you watch, keep your area, hands, and components clean and stored proper, you shouldn’t have any trouble !! Lets face it,if a “REAL” SHTF senario really hits, you an’t going down to Bobs Guns & Ammo to buy yourself a box of Factory ammo thats for sure !!! Do it right and your should have no worries !! Hell in all my years of shooting,I think I have had more “Factory” duds than reloads that I have made !!! Just sayin !!! Keep us posted on how ya make out !!
I need to find time to trim a but load of casings first. Unfortunately, I have a rough draft due next Monday with more research to be done, so my time just went out the window for this week.
Roger that on the Hornady book. I have loaded my match 30.06 for my M1 from that, well, remembering the data from the book when I bought some 155 gr. A-Max. Have yet to try them out.:cray:
Thanks again. Going to see what the Speer book can offer.
Hornady TAP is on my list. I have some factory rounds loaded but they need to be changed out soon.
When loading the SS109 bullets, remember to use 69gr data as the SS109 bullet has a similar length bearing surface and is much longer than a cup-and-core 62gr bullet.
