Hey guys.
I have a couple questions about reloading .223 and would love some answers.
I looked for the “So, you think you want to reload”-post, but didn’t find one.
How much, roughly, does it cost to reload my spent brass?
How much, roughly, does it cost to get set up?
I’m in a little bit of a hurry & don’t have my numbers in front of me right now, but once you’ve got the brass you’ll save around 30-50% reloading 223/556. It depends a little bit on how much you’re willing to shop around for components.
You can spend $70-ish/K on 55 grain FMJ’s; or over $200/K on Sierra 77 grain Match Kings. For my training loads I use Montana Gold 55 FMJ, or whatever I can find cheap. Just shop around, and keep in mind some companies out there have nice bulk discounts.
You can spend as much as you want to getting set up. I strongly recommend a Dillon press. There “no BS warranty” really is! Regardless, you’ll pay for your set-up in the first few thousand rounds.
To start, you’ll need a press, dies, a scale, micrometer, a powder measure, probably a chronograph at some point, and a good book. Read the book and poke around on forums like this before you start, it will help a lot.
