If you genuinely believe that someone is intellectually incapable of understanding why they don’t understand, trying to explain it to them by referencing the effect is by definition fruitless and pointless, as the theory postulates that the person is literally incapable of grasping the fact that they don’t understand the prerequisite information to form an informed opinion on the matter. Therefore no matter what, you can never convince them that yours is the correct analysis, and further discourse is absolutely pointless.
Therefore, referencing the effect in an argument is always by definition a simple ad hominem disguised in the form of an appeal, that ironically speaks more to the comprehension of the person levying the insult than it does to the person on the receiving end. It’s like calling someone a doodoo head while literally having shit on your own head, and to the outside observer who actually understands, it’s hilarious.
