This has probally been covered before and if so sorry, But Im trying to figure out at what yardage to zero red dot. For home security in house you want to be dead on. But outside house property coverage I would want center mass hit out to 200yd or so. So would say 50yd zero be better or whats your all opinion and how did you come to that conclusion. I zero my 16" AR’s at 200 yards. POI at 100 yards is ~1.5" high. From 0 - 300 yards, I hold high center of mass and send it.
Since you mentioned a 50-yard zero, I’ll echo what F2S says in the linked thread: I have never seen a 50 yard zero that didn’t need adjustment at 200. Whenever I zero, I get on the center of the paper at 50, then make all further adjustments at 200.
I zeroed my rifle at 36 yards and verified at 300 with a steel target. This gives me the ability to hit the torso of a man sized target up to 300 yards. Any further than that I just need to use holdovers and I can hit it at 400 and 500 yards.
My irons and RDS get zeroed at 50 yards, magnified scopes at 100 or 200.
I like the 50 yd zero because it’s +/- 2 inches out to 220 yards or so (theoretically). I suppose I could zero the irons and RDS out to 200; but, frankly, my eyesight isn’t good enough (astigmatism) and my backups (MBUS 2.0) are fine enough to do it.
