Recontouring barrels and gas block sizes

I was thinking to myself recently that I really want a lightweight barrel profile, but the vast majority of good barrels out there have that silly gov’t profile, which I believe uses a .750 gas block. What I had in mind is a something with .625 under the handguards and .625 or .600 past the gas block. I would be aiming for a low-profile, pinned gas block.

So, the question: in recontouring one of these better barrels (BCM, Centurion, Noveske) to the above diameters, would I notice a difference between a .750 and a .625 gas block? In my head I have the idea that the brief “fat” part of the barrel might do something to barrel harmonics, but the realist in me wonders if it’s enough of a “something” to impact the function of the barrel.

Thoughts?
