+1 on cooking your own food. It saves money and you can control exactly what you eat and what goes in your food.
Its really not even that hard to cook and prepare your meals. Buy salads and meats for example. Meats e.g. chicken, beef, or fish are very easy to grill or cook on a pan. Doesn’t take a genius to grill chicken or fish, and it doesn’t take long either. Add some green salads, and your choice of fruits. That’s it, simple as that.
Drinking alcohol has never been an issue for me. I only drink when there is an occasion or get-together with friends (usually 2-3x a month). If drinking is part of your daily/weekly routine, this can be a challenge–but it can be done. All about self-discipline and control.
Another big thing to watch out for is your sugar and carb intake. Soda’s and candy must be cut down or cut out completely if you can manage it. Easier said than done of course, but if you can control your sugar/carb intake, it is a huge factor in losing weight.
Exactly, on all points. I love cooking a solid meal, and only really started getting into it when I started trying to eat healthy.
Last year, I decided before deer season that the only red meat I eat would be what I harvest, and I’d only take what I needed for about 8-12oz per week for a year (one decent-sized doe, pretty much). It’s lean, it tastes great, and it cost me about $1.50 for the bullet. I also have salmon once every couple weeks, and chicken and tuna like it’s going out of style. Found a good farmer’s market as well, so lots of veggies. One thing that I noticed quick was that the best food doesn’t take a lot of work or a lot of stuff out of a can. For a guy trying to eat good AND healthy, a grill is your best friend.
As for sweets… just don’t bring them in the house, and the issue goes away. It’s interesting, after not eating fast food, soda, cakes/brownies, etc. for about a year, most of them just taste like total shit to me now.
I know what you what you mean about junk food tasting shitty. I used to really like extra mayo. Now, it tastes like crap. I made a tuna sandwich a few weeks ago with extra mayo on cheat day… I couldn’t finish it. That’s never happened before. I’m now to where if my meals aren’t complete with good food, I feel incomplete. It’s funny how tastes and fulfillment work.
I use a George forman grill and bbq a bunch. Pan the rest. I haven’t used the oven very much.
We’ve cut way back on beef…which is hard for us since we’re in the beef business. You can’t eat hamburger in food 10 times a week. We still do, but it’s the least used meat now.
I feel like pure crap when I eat fast food after I’ve cut it out. Really my only vice is Vaping. Jog every night eat better, quit smoking dipping chewing and all others, save for vaping.
Another thing I’ve done and it really did help was peanut butter. I don’t mean half a jar but we get two breaks at work and I’m a penny pincher so indoor clock out most of the time for lunch. I eat a fair sized spoonful of peanut butter on both breaks and it gets me thru till 4pm when I leave.
Some days when I do take lunch, I’ll do Pizza Hut salad bar or go to the grocery store down the street and grab a pack of raw broccoli or cauliflower and used to get ranch. Now I’m on the vinegar shit. Find a veggie you like raw and indulge in it for a snack vs 4 packs of nutty buddy bars or 6 ding dongs/Ho ho’s
I used to put a hurting on dollar menus and little Caesars for lunch
