Army Hardtack Recipe
Ingredients:

4 cups flour (perferably whole wheat)
4 teaspoons salt
Water (about 2 cups)
Pre-heat oven to 375° F
Makes about 10 pieces

Made the above and talk about a salty biscuit, tried to research why they used so much salt and came up empty. I’M wondering if the high salt content was used as some sort of preservative?

might be on the part of helping the eater retain liquids in the body just my thought

Salt was a good preservative. Soldiers on by sides during the Civil War found very ingenious ways to make hardtack more edible. One way was to fry the hardtack in some sort of fat to give it flavor and to kill the bugs that were eating the biscuit.
