I need a load for Hunting and target, the closer together they are , the better.
Thinking about running 180/190 Grain bullets and would like them to exit at 3,000 fps. Thinking Berger VLD hunting 185grain, Nosler Ballistic tip 180grain, (half the price of the VLD’s)
Nosler makes the Spitzer Bullet in Accubond Ball Tip. Any thoughts on the Spitzer?
Need to wrk up a load for an Elk hunt and target. I’ll probably try a few 175’s since I have some from 308.
I use Rem brass, but whichever brand you decide on use only that brand.
Reloader 22 is pretty good. I started out with 200gr SMKs and when I wanted to start hunting with it, I used 180gr. Barnes triple shock. I just loaded my hunting round to track with my target round out to about 600 yds.
Here is my hunting load for my 300 win. This is my long range load as it stands now, but I have a new one in the works with the 200g TTSX.
Nosler Brass
Berger 185g VLD hunting
81g H1000 (this is hot start at least 4 grains lower win brass wont take this load!!!)
CCI BR2 match primer
MV is 3030 es 12 sd 14
I have a 1/4 group at 200 yards with this load, it opens up a bit out to 600 but it stays very consistant from there.
Try to keep in mind for the hunt you going to fire 1 shot at most and you wont want to be dicking with POI changes from firing 5 or 6 rounds in rapid sucession. On that note what I’m suggesting is zero and hunt for a cold bore engagement. I dont know what your rifle is but 3 shots is doable before I see a shift in my rifle.
Just some thoughts
Always give up spped for accuracy and fir long shots on game the higher the BC the better just for the retained energy thats why I’m switching to the 200g TTSX it has a lower impact velocity.
I’m all over this. Thank you. I read where 300WM HAS VARIOUS , capacity issues in brass etc. I also read the H1000 was good for 300WM, so your post confirms everything I have read so far.
Yes, my gun is a Browning long range hunter. It has a heavy stainless barrel tapered down and fluted to make handling for hunting much better. It holds three shot groups MOA on every half ass factory ammo easily before getting too hot.
We shot it this week and decided it was comfortable enough to do significant range work on weekends. I bought a Warne tactical base 20MOA, and used some old seekins rings with a Ziess Conquest with target knobs 4.5-14x50. It should be a great long range hunter 500 yards, and range gun to 1000 yards. Getting a Kenton custom knob for 300 WM.
Your welcome if its deer your after and you want to keep the cost of shooting a little lower you can try the 208g AMAX or the 240g SMK if you choose SMK it has to be the 220 or the 240 the others wont hold togher long enough.
I would say H1000 is the most popular powder for the 300 win mag. If you were going to push the 240g SMK or a 230g VLD I would say give RUTOMBO a try, but if not H1000 is your powder.
Lots of guys quit on the Berger due to the fact they dont know about the seating depths I almost did. The only bullets in the same class at the Berger are the ACCUBOND, SARACCO and the TTSX. Before we get into custom bullets like the JLK or the wildcats.
My win mag is a 1000 yard plus deer gun all day long
Ya its a good one. Eric, Bergers ballistican post on that site and he always awnsers any question asked. He frequently uses the fourms members to test new bullets before they go into full scale production.
I have a press I take right to the range and clamp it to a bench to adjust seating depths in real time.
Here is the rifle
The seating depth test results, I further tweeked the .050 load. Most trouble free load I ever did.
I have edited this post 3 times I keep thinking of stuff. Magizine length can be an issue with these bullets. I was running my rifle as a single shot for about a year. Its built on a HOWA action and the mag box is shorter than a LA rem 700. I had a rem 700 mag box installed on the reciver to accomodate the longer COAL. I dont know what the options are for a browning but I can find out. If your lucky it has a long mag box.
Cool. I watch the show Long Range Pursuit all the time. I’m not even a hunter… But the stuff they do is still applicable to for precision target shooting.
They hunt with the VLDs… So I was familiar with the seating concerns of a secant ogive bullet.
If you would like, stop on over to the LRH fourm and hang out for a little while. A bunch of great guys there no hide types just strait shooters, that dont tolarate alot of BS. You will not hear “my budy who was a sniper said that…” type of shit. Its about hunting and competition.
I full length resize them its no diffrent than a non belted case. I think the die allows for the belt. I use hornady dies on everything, if I adjust the die its for the shoulder.
Alright, we loaded some H1000 with 81grains in Winchester brass. I found Nosler brass after we started on the Winchester Brass. Berger VLD 185’s. We’ll let you know how it goes.
Your not going to start lower? If not be safe thats a hot load as I said before. I’m pretty worried your at the very least going to pop a primer so make sure you got eye pro on! I would realy start lower than 81g I cant stress this enough never start at the top!!!
I couldn’t get on M4 because the site was down to check your recipe. The Lymans book has 83.5 as max load. So we started with 81grains. I think the H1000 can had higher load data as well.
We didn’t blow any primers. Mark rolled four versions with various “Jumps”. The pisser is/was, none would fit into my gun, so next time we are going to start at max length for my Win Mag and try a variety.
Two of the loads shot MOA or better. We hand fed them. The shot 3050 to 3097 if I remember correctly. I have no idea how you even fit 83.5 grains in the 300WM, it was almost full to the top. We are going to have to seat the bullets deeper and maybe drop a grain next time.
We dinged the 1000 yard target with ease, the Berger were impressive.
On the Berger, Mark loaded some in the 308 load for flight comparison. At 1000 with our load for 175 SMK’s, the Berger 185 (heavier Bullet - same powder charge) flew 3 to 5 feet higher and bucked wind by 2 or 3 feet. Very impressive IMHO.
The Lyman book says 83.5 wow. I was super worried you were going to put you eye out;). Glad it came out good. When you said they dont fit in the gun you ment the mag right?
Thats normal for these bullets lots of guys single round load them. I Had this issue with my rifle until I had the mag box replaced.
What range did you shoot the seating depth test at?
Thats not enough time for a long VLD type projectile to stabalize. Your test realy didnt tell you anything about your load. The rounds you shot at 1k did.
Ya 200 is a good starting point. The rounds you shot at 1k told you alot more that a 200 yard group can. If you were putting them in a consistant group at 1k then you got a load? Also remember dont let that barrel get to hot. at least 10 min between firings is what I do
