A New York lawmaker says that the state’s recently passed gun control law stunningly fails to include any exemptions for law enforcement officers, and technically prohibits police from ever bringing guns on school grounds or possessing extended ammo magazines.

The NY SAFE Act, which was championed and signed into law by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, bans all magazines that hold more than seven bullets and pre-1994 high capacity magazines, and prohibits the carrying of guns on school grounds.

But because no loophole for law enforcement was included in the law, every police officer in the state is technically in violation of the statute even though the prohibition is unlikely to be enforced, according to New York Assemblyman Al Graf…

Libtards - smarter than the REST of us: just ask THEM!

If (liberal) logic holds true, then the PD doesn’t need exemption since the “bans” will make it all safe for everyone.

Irony!

That’s their stupid thinking. They THINK they can legislate THEIR morality.

Good. I’m struggling to find a compelling reason for there to be an exemption in the first place. I’m not into a Japanese style caste system.

So in their rush to pass new laws to make everyone safe that was based off an emotional knee jerk reaction they shot themselves in the foot. Awesome…and pun intended.

At least they can only shoot their foot 7 times.

Someone needs to make sure that every cop who carries a handgun onto a NY school should be arrested and prosecuted. Maybe then they will truly see how stupid this law is.

A little harsh, I’m sure. But there is no reason that they should be allowed to be above the law, regardless of how stupid it is.

I had the Miller “Real Men of Genius” song going off in my head the whole time reading that linked article.

Good chuckle!

Good luck convincing all police to arrest all police for violating a stupid law.

As much as I don’t like the enforcement of unconstitutional “laws,” police are only doing their job and have to put up with way to much bullshit, trying to walk a fine line between badguys and political correctness 24/7. I’d hate to be in that position.

You forgot the +1!

Let them save it for :suicide:

Ah yes!.One in the chamber!

Ok it’s great to know only 8 shots to the foot!

No matter what the law this is why, unless the most dire of circumstances, like we get invaded by the British in 1812 and things need to be done RFN because they are burning DC down, laws should not be introduced, debated, passed by two legislative bodies, and signed by the executive in under 24hrs.

NY’ers who choose to stay, and vote next time need to fire the GOP’ers in the NYS Senate who allowed this to happen. Even if they are replaced by Democrats at least you won’t be stabbed in the back. I’d rather face my enemies head on not from the rear.

I am extremely interested to see how the politicos and police administrators dance around the issue of they believe LEO’s need to be able to carry higher capacity magazines than do civilians.

Won’t this brilliant, life-saving piece of legislation suddenly make all criminals only load 7 rounds into magazines?

Thus, if an armed New York resident is required to face 2 or 3 home invaders surprising them with, (if they are lucky), seconds to process what is going on and respond with only 7 rounds in a magazine, then your average police officer should be just fine with 7 and several magazines on their belt, body armor, a radio, and back up coming at top speed.

I also find it extremely telling that one “requirement” cited for police to have higher capacity magazines is to better respond to a school shooter. Remember, it’s about the children. Yeah, right.

The same people that made that statement, don’t want the people within the school to be armed and confront the threat immediately; but instead absorb as many casualties as possible until the police arrive, find the shooter, and actually engage them.

This is precisely the type of situation that helps foster the class warfare among the civilians who feel the police are given special treatment, and the police who believe they have more rights than non-LEO.

Police should not be restricted in their ability to defend themselves, others or respond to threats.

Neither should civilians.
