real difference in .223 an 5.56

Hey guys, Since I am pretty sure I have already stuck one of my feet in my mouth, could someone tell me the real difference, if any,
between the .223 and the 5.56 nato, so as to not stick the other foot in there. My wife tells me to not trust everything I read on wikipedia, so I will ask the experts.
