I did a search of the forum and found that most have opted for Cerakote/etc, or that the question of simple Krylon never was definitively answered. Simply put, I have a BCM SS 16" with KMR that I want to rattle can, I didn’t have any intentions on stripping the upper down, I was just going to do my typical rattle can job.
Any thoughts? Bad idea, is there something I should do to the barrel in particular first?
My SDM-R I carried in 05 had a stainless barrel that was rattle canned black. After about 6 months the paint started to come off but i would just spray it black again.
Rattle can away, the last two uppers I put together and one of my PR bolt guns have had rattle can paint jobs on the barrel and other parts and if it gets a little ugly I just call it character. Just about any rattle can finish is going to wear fast but a coat of clear matte should help.
I recently tried several rattle cans and by far the best was VHT high temp Engine Metallic. Did a bcm sst while back and am very happy. It looks like cerakote. It does have a tiny bit of metallic in it, but you can’t see the metallic at all at over a few inches. I did blast it beforehand.
Mine was also a BCM SS. IF it’s important to you to last, you really need to blast the sst, using a scotchbrite purple pad might last. You will have to take the MKR off either way. I mentioned the VHT. Don’t use the standard VHT or any high temp header paint, it needs to be baked on which happens naturally on headers of course, but this will not occur on a barrel unless one runs a case at FA! That’s why I went with and plan to use again the VHT ENGINE DETAILING PAINT. It still has a pretty high temp rating but does not need to be baked. If you blast it, at least triple tape the muz and chamber. If you have a compressor, you can pick up a small sandblaster and easily do it in your yard. Sand, glass beads or aluminum oxide will all work very well.
Out of curiosity, why? Do you want to get rid of reflections? I’ve got a BCM 16" SS410 with 13" KMR and it looks great with that little bit of stainless sticking out and showing through the KeyMod holes. I love it
Scotchbrite does wonders, but be patient with it - it’s not as good as sand blasting, but for something that’s going to take a coat of high heat rattle can, it’s plenty adequate.
I cleaned my stainless barrels (and the rest of the rifle) with water as hot as I could get it and a mild degreasing soap (like dish soap), scrubbed and rinsed with more hot water. One barrel I bead blasted. Then painted them with rattle cans. I’m happy with the results
