rate my castle nut staking job

Guys - just wanted to know if this thing is staked well enough or if i need to smack it with a hammer and punch a couple more times.

Thx.

After PM’ing many members of the board, we rate your nut

as follows…

adequate with proper torquing.

i made a special tool for this job, kinda looks like a V with one side vertical, and slightly narrower than the castle nuts slot, the vertical side placed towards rear of receiver and one accurate swift whack with a 1 1/2 lb. ball pein hammer will look as good as any Colt staked C-nut

The nut looks great, fr00t!

But you beat the piss out of that fr00ty sling attachment plate gizmo. It’ll hold. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s on the wrong side of the slot. The idea is to keep the nut from loosening, meaning turning counter-clockwise as you look at the rifle from the rear, or “up” in your pictures. The staking really should be on the opposite side of the slot to keep the nut from loosening. Not that I think that a 1/64" turn is going to cause your file to malfunction, but if you’re going to whack at it with a hammer and a punch you may as well put the booger where it should be.

That is a good catch.

Given the way it’s staked, it looks like it could loosen 1/4 millimeter or so before the displaced metal makes contact with the castle nut notch. I can’t imagine it could loosen any further so I’d think it’s fine but I’d like to hear from other’s too. Most of the ones I’ve seen are staked so the metal flows into the notch, making contact on both sides. Sorry about the poor pic.

EDIT: I’m so damn slow typing, at least two others got in before me. Oh, well.

That has got to be the nicest staking job I’ve EVER seen.
So smooth and uniform. Who did that? I wonder what kind of tool they are using for that, cause it sure as hell isn’t a regular punch done by hand.
