What do you guys prefer and why?
OK, maybe thats too simple but I guess I just don’t get the need for the L-plate over the Ranger plate.

Two different functions. I didn’t design the L-plate to assist with getting mags out of pouches, but it’s worked that way for some people using pouches that wont fit the Ranger plate.
I use both.
OK so what is the main design purpose of the L? To provide a bumper to cushion the mag?
Since you use both, what do you use the two for?
Cushion the mag and allow easier disassembly of the magazine for cleaning (mine get exposed to a lot of dust).
Mine mainly serve for the in the gun magazine, especially in situations where I want something a little more low profile.
If your ultimate goal is efficient removal from mag pouches, then the Ranger is probably going to serve you best.
