So I’ve got some old Colt 20 round straight aluminum magazines, and I want to add ranger plates to them to facilitate easier magazine changes. I know that the old Colt mags have different floor plates than regular mags, so what are my options? Where can I get them? Do they require modification? Will they downgrade capacity?
I did a search, but I found conflicting information, so I want to clarify. Thanks.
Get some original magpuls. ![]()
I would, but then my mags wont fit well in my mag pouches, so id like something lower profile. And custom made 550 pulls are an option, but id like to know about these first.
Save those Colt 20’s and get some MagPul Pmag 20’s. I think you can go with rangers for those?
You wanna trade me pmag 20s for my 8 colt 20 rounders?
seriously, has ANYONE done this? Id love some help…
OP - I have some of both, the old Colt 20-rounders and some Ranger plates.
I’ll see if I can make one fit, and let you know.
From the reports I have read on the Magpul 20-rounders, I would prefer the Colt’s. I think I have 20 or so of them, some old, some newish.
Ok please let me know how it goes!
Rangers do NOT fit 20 round Colt/USGI mags.
I’ve done it. It wasn’t very easy. I had to cut the lock plate to fit around the floor plate lock that is present on the 20 rd magazines. It would probably be easier to just cut that aluminum lock off, but I didn’t think to do that at the time. I had to mash the lock part of the magazine down a little to get the ranger plate itself on. The magazine holds 19 rds now.
If your mags are like the majority of mine they have the spring clip to retain the plate. I just very carefully dremel the 3 rivets holding the clip on the spine of the mag and pop it off. The mag is spot welded together so I don’t think it will fall apart, I am using Magpul followers in my mags, and I am going to use ranger plates in my mags the are dedicated to 300 blkout.
Your mileage may vary, but it works for me
