Range test: Tan 20" MSAR STG 556

I acquired this tan 20" MSAR STG-556 during the Christmas sale. I have been tied up and I didn’t get a chance to break it in, until recently. My testing was conducted at a local outdoor range and a local P.D. indoor range.

Phase 1

I fired a variety of .223 and 5.56 loads through my rifle at the outdoor range. The loads that I shot were: PMC 55 gr FMJ Bronze, Federal XM 193 55 gr FMJ, PPU 62gr M855, and Fiocchi 55gr FMJ. A total of 500 rds that day.

I had only one FTF in the first 5 rounds. That was it. No problems at all during this range session.

Here is a 50 round rapid fire group at 100 yards using Fiocchi 55 gr FMJ. Not the best rapid fire group. I can usually do better.

Phase 2

Next range session was done in my local P.D. indoor range. I fired another 500 rounds (Winchester white box 55 gr FMJ 5.56, Fiocchi 55 gr FMJ, and Federal 55 gr .223 JSP). No problems at all! :slight_smile:

Very nice looking shooter. I’ve got a black MSAR STG 556 with a 16" barrel. I will take it to NRA Range this Friday night. :cool:

That Tan STG look’s great.

Ive been on the fence for a few weeks now on wether to get one or not but I been waiting for review’s like this one and I like what I see.

That skateboard tape behind the ejection port?

My only choice’s if I do get on are Tan/blk or o/d all 16" or a 18.5" E4 setup.

The skate board tape keeps the stock from getting dinged up by some of the ejected cases.

The tape is an old AUG trick to keep the stock nice and nick free. :slight_smile:

Others use velcro, electrical tape, duct tape (100mph tape) and such.

beautiful rifle, I plan on getting one very soon just debating between the stg 556 and E4.

I went with the STG with it’s proprietary mags because the AUG mags have proven in the past to be reliable and durable. Plus, the L.E. cost for the STG mags were quite reasonable.

I’ll have to get some pictures of my STG 556 up soon, just waiting till I get my sling in hahahah.

Which optic are you using? How is it working out for you?

Not meaning to hijack Ray’s thread. But here’s what I’m using for an optic on my STG. It’s the Leupold CQ/T 1x-3x scope.

I tried one of these on an AR some years back and didn’t like it because it made the carbine very top heavy. The STG’s balance point is more centered and the weight up top doesn’t really make the gun feel bad at all, in my opinion.

I am currently using Leupolds’ Mark AR 1.5 to 4 power scope. It’s not fancy, but it is working great for me. :slight_smile:

Down the road, I might switch optics, but for now, I’ll stick to what I got.

Tokarevs’ Leupold CQ/T 1x-3x scope is another good option. :slight_smile:

I have been offered a trade + some ammo, or whatever for one in black, for my M1A Bush lately, and I was VERY tempted! My only hangup with the trade is, the M1A is my only 308, but, I am finally 99% sure I have a job now, so I could replace the 308 later, and in something other than M1A. The MSAR in trade, is the STG and NOT the E4, which my understanding is the E4 can not only take AR mags, but will be coming out with a 6.8 barrel. That part I really like.

are the factory 1.5x optics any good? i like the way it looks. :smiley:

and does anyone know if a microtech msar 1.5x optic will fit on the steyr aug a3 if i were to swap it out?

Some like the factory optic, but others don’t. I heard that they don’t make these optics anymore.

They do not fit on the Steyr A3.

The STG stocks can be swapped out to E4 stocks. One can purchase them separately. :slight_smile:

The factory optic has been discontinued. There has been some speculation that MSAR is looking for a new contractor to produce the factory optic but I don’t think that’s anything other than wishful thinking at this point.

There have been a number of posts on TOS about scopes not holding zero, etc. The scope that came on my E4 broke within 50-75 rounds.

I agree that the scope looks “right” on the Microtech but there are better options out there if you plan on using your rifle at all.
