I have put off buying some type of hard case/toolbox for a long time, but am thinking about getting one now.
Want something decent sized but not huge, to keep a few cleaning supplies, tools, maybe some ammo/mags, etc in. Just to organize some of the crap that always seems to go to the range with me. Something that could double as bench storage/organizer at home would be nice too.
Looked at Brownell’s but nothing really seemed to jump out at me. Curious what you guys are using. Thanks.
If you’re looking more towards a spare parts bin, ITS Tactical did a great write up on one they put together. As far as ammo, mag storage, those go in my backpack.
For a range bag I carry one of these that I got off the bargain table at a plumbing supply store. http://www.lenoxtools.com/pages/Product.aspx?productId=1787474
I’d pay full price for one now, knowing how well they work for me. The pockets in it will hold 8 AR-mags, and 10 pistol mags. Plus there’s room for my ear pro and other shit. It’s made to handle heavy weight and it doesn’t flinch being filled with 30 loaded AR mags.
I know this isn’t what your looking for but after 20 years of different stuff what really works for me is a bucket boss. I have to walk a ways to the shooting area when I go to the range and am not shooting at home. Being able to throw ammo, mags, handgun, targets and a beverage in it with long funs in the other hand just works. I have tools and the like in the pockets and the bucket contents is determines by what I am shooting that day.
I just use a small craftsman’s tool box for home use of keeping tools and cleaning supplies in. Nothing to large and it can sit on my bench easily or be moved if I am doing any traveling.
The model I have must be discontinued. It worked out great for a while. There was plenty of storage in the upper portion. The bottom portion I didn’t use that often, really only when I knew I was going to be shooting alot at the range that day for carrying ammo. Unfortunately, the back hinges for the top lid started to crack and really the only thing holding it on is a hook type hinge in the center of back.
So, now I am trying to figure out another option as well. The plumber’s tool carrier that AKdoug posted seems like an interesting idea. I have been looking at something similar already. Carriers like those seems pretty easy and to the point. I don’t really feel like paying 100$ or more for a carrier someone labels as a range bag. I think it will probably fit the bill and I will more in likely pick one up in the next month or so. Guess we will see how it works out.
I have a 20" plastic Plano tool box that I bought for $20 at the local hardware store. It has a large lift out tray inside. There are two small detachable boxes with small compartments where I can store small parts attached to the top.
One thing I learned about range boxes is that the bigger the box I have, the more I put in the box, the more it weighs and the harder it is to find anything when I need it. If you are going to lug a lot of gear and parts to the range, I would suggest buying two medium size boxes instead of one big one.
I just use a couple $5 plastic tool boxes from Walmart. They work perfectly fine for storing and organizing all my cleaning supplies and gun tools. On sits in the trunk of my work car, the other in my garage. I know it isn’t fancy, but it gets the job done.
I’ve got an Eagle E&E bag I use to carry mags, ammo, and other range gear.
