I have been intrigued by the ACOG TA44SG-10 and decided to pick one up, “pre-owned” of course, and got a great price on it. I have it on my HK MR556A1 now and got it out to the range for zeroing last week. The results were pretty darn impressive. The ONLY thing I do not like about it and this may be real deal breaker is that you get it into the shade, and the bright center circle with the tiny dot in it really fades away. But, despite that, here is a picture of the five shot group I got after zeroing it. At 25 yards, from bipod. Good enough for government work/CQB, etc. Following it are pics of the ACOG and the rifle. I like to run my rifle with the butt stock nearly all the way in. The picture through the ACOG is simply spectacularly bright and excellent, as one would expect. I’ll see how this goes for a while when running it in training classes.
Good to hear, I have one incoming and wanted something a little different compared to running T1s exclusively now. The ACOG transition light/dark is expected and as long as you expect that it will never be a RDS at 1.0, it is a fine optic. ACOG glass for me has always been awesome [owned/employed higher power versions], can’t wait to run mine through it’s paces on this mini version and compare it to my T1s. Nice 5 shot group!

I can chime in a bit here. I have the TA45-2 (1.5x24 red triangle reticule) mounted on my 14.5" BCM. While not the same as your optic, I consider it somewhat “similar”. Like every Trijicon optic I’ve experienced this one has very clear glass. I find (as you have) that it’s very accurate, but I haven’t had an issue going from bright light into shade that you have experienced. No, the reticule isn’t as bright, but it is still clearly visible. I know others have complained about this as well but going from bright outdoors into a darkened house, I haven’t had any problems. How old is your scope? It may be a problem with the tritium dimming. You could consider sending it back to Trijicon for servicing and they will replace the tritium element bringing it back to brand spanking new performance levels.
I think the “problem” was that I was in deep shadow, not darkness. I was shooting under a roofed rifle range. The green reticle, just turned a kind of olive drab reticle. Still useable but when I got into the full sun again…HUGE difference. The ACOG is basically brand new, so I do not think it is a Tritium issue, but I’ll look into it.
Almost pulled the trigger on one of these about 6mo ago. Had a guy down to $700 on GB for a brand new one. Should’ve done it. I’m really wishing I could demo one or even find one in a store to look through.
OP, do you find that tiny 1.5x is noticeable at 50-100yds vs a std RDS? Giving a slight edge in sharpness? That’s why I’m interested in the optic. Precision hits at 100yds through my Aimpoints is not getting any easier.
I think you’ve got it backwards. The reticle washes out when in a dark area shooting into a bright area.
The issue with ACOGs for me is when shooting from a dark area (say, a POS Afghan hut) into a really bright area (say, a sunny desert) the reticle is practically gone. I think Surf was one of the first ones to point this out to me.
ACOG’s are the ticket for the AR based rifles. The versatility and precision potential are outstanding.
Now I’ll have to look at downsizing LOL
I tried a TA44SR-10 several years ago due to astigmatism issues when using Aimpoints. In normal lighting conditions, I was just as fast and accurate with the TA44SR-10 (even more accurate on long range targets). The 1.5x at short ranges did nothing to slow me down. I never noticed it. However, the known issue of losing the illumination and ending up with a dark reticle while shooting from a dark area into a bright area eventually became a no-go for me and I went back to Aimpoint and learned to live with the astigmatism issues. Trijicon would have a winner here if they would offer LED lighting and utilize a small CR2032 battery.

Not sure exactly what you are asking, but if you are asking how well the reticle works at 50 and 100 hards I’d say, “Great!”
As for “precision hits” at 100, for that you’ll want a precision rifle.
If you want good minute of bad guy results, I was putting rounds consistently into a 5" paper plate at 100 from the bench.
That’s what I meant. Consistently hitting a 5" plate at 100yd through an EOTech or Aimpoint would be tough for me now with no magnification unless I’m sitting on the bench taking my time. I’m right on the edge in the past couple of years being “confident” with any speed at 100yds with no magnification.
I’m wondering if the 1.5x magnification would be enough to get me there again. My 1.25-4 VX-R Leupy turned down to its lowest magnification isn’t a good comparison as the ACOGs got different eye relief, reticle, FOV etc, obviously.
I just need to try one of 'em out. I could probably get a pretty good idea just holding one at the LGS, except they never have any in.
Bingo. I’ve had a bunch of ACOG’s but I use all my gear on duty/SWAT. When I used it in cqb / house training during low light / no light the reticule would go black in conjunction with using my X300/x300u.
So I had to sell them.
With that additional detail, I’d say 1.5 may not be enough for you.
Received the ACOG TA44SG yesterday and compared it to my T-1 indoor, pitch black, on white walls/dark objects w/ X300 [older version] SF mounted at 1200 on rail. I’ve noticed that the further you move the COG toward the front of the rifle, the better I’m able to pick up reticle even though it may be dimmer than usual. Found a sweet spot that balances that and eye relief [this has huge ER]. Oddly enough the reticle in this particular model seems brighter/more noticable in this scenario compared to my former issued COG, which seems to be related to the lower magnification & color. I did not sense a loss of speed compared to the T1, however that may have to do with not running my light offset on the rail, center of the light will be the reticle in addition to the ‘low’ power COG. Surprising since I was not expecting it do so well.
Will be running it outdoors this weekend next to the T1. One thing I’ve forgotten with running T1s for so long is how clear the COG glass is.
