I recently had my Bare Bones Noveske 16 upper upgraded. I had the :Daniel Defense 12.0 Lite for Middys
:YHM front sight with gas block, flips down
:Bushnell 1.25-4 with Red Dot
:AAC Brakeout
The Daniel Defense rail with front cut out looks and feels great. I highly recommend it like most DD products. Very nice.
The YHM front sight, before instal it would not lock in the “up” position. I lubed it and worked it out a little and it started locking in place very strong. When I shot it at the range, no problem. When I was cleaning the gun, it started that goofy, will not lock in place issue again. The sight overextends and rocks forward? I could not get it functioning properly again. Lubing and praying and had no effect. Anyone?
Bushnell 30mm 1.25-4 RDS was a very pleasant surprise. Sight picture was very easy to pick up at 1.25 and as expected required more effort at 4X. The glass is excellent. I cant imagine it gets much better.
AAC Brakeout. It functioned very well as a Brake. However, this is my only Middy which may shoot a little softer, I just put on a rail adding weight then topped it off with the Brake. It did shoot very soft and I could keep the RDS very stable. Flash Suppression?, its a 16 inch gun and looked like the fourth of July with three different kinds of ammo. Even TAP ammo? I could see the flash big time coming out of the sides, but not out of the front- I think.
I tried to get it real tight without locktite, but it did come loose. IMHO, it needs the Locktite that comes with. Could it being loose effect its flash suppression?
The upgrade was worth the cost and effort. Just needs refinement.
I personally am not a fan of the FSP rails because the front sight sticks out where I want to put my left hand.
With regards to your brake coming loose.
Take it back off, and clean the threads with alcohol or acetone.
Make sure you are getting enough torque when timing it.
Use Rocksett as the barrel heat is high enough normal Locktite will break down. This is the reason Rocksett is used on most brakes because it has a much higher heat resistance than Locktite.
You only need a couple drops.
Wait 24hrs before shooting it so the Rocksett can set properly.
And every brake Ive seen that is “open” like the Brakeout, Surefire, etc produce a lot of flash. Its ok at night if you can put a can on the gun but if you don’t have a can then I would not use a brake like that. If you just plink at the range it doesn’t really matter.

eta…I def. want one of those brakeouts, what more could you ask for in a muzzle device outside of noise suppression than one that reduces flash and muzzle flip:)
definitely use the rocksett on the brakeout installation. i used loctite on a blackout and it loosened up - didn’t have a prob when i reinstalled it with rocksett. i don’t like to torque muzzle devices on too tightly.
i have the same experience with the brakeout - works well as a comp, but not as a flash hider. i had it on my SCAR, shot it at night, and the flash was huge with LC M855. made my NVGs shut off momentarily every time i took a shot. i’ve swapped the brakeout back to the blackout.
in this one, i have the SCAR sitting in my lap and i’m using the DBAL A2 and helmet mounted PVS-14 to shoot at a AR500 steel plate - it made purty sparks. but you can see the muzzle flash is a no-go for night shooting.
Dude that is badass…what gives you the right to have that type of fun:D Really good pics there for sure…that does suck though that it has such a muzzle flash and I def. would not have expected that given my blackouts eliminate just about all flash completely. I wonder why they are still marketing it as a f/h as well as being a brake:confused:
eta…WOW, i looked again and that is some serious dragon’s breath! I just watched that neat lil video as well and that is quite revealing and telling. I really did think that it would flash suppress better than that…might as well call the thing a brake and be done with it.
Oh thats great, It doesnt flip up correctly and may rotate? Very good. Now I wish I had gone low profile and stand alone. I was looking for Robust and got shinola. Shit that sucks, really sucks.
Hey, no worries. I learned the hard way with the same gas block just like you. The reason it rotates is because it clamps on. I would recommend getting a one-piece gas block that you can have pinned. That’s what I did and I haven’t had anymore problems.
I have the YHM flip-up on my first build and hate it. I ordered a standard FSB and got this from the builder as “a gift” for being months late with my upper. The guess was that he was out of standard FSB’s… I don’t trust this sight at all - it’s wobbly and seems destined to fail under hard use. I may be wrong, but I have no faith in this set-up.
