Rail questions...

Hi all, new guy here, and after lots of lurking this site and learning, I’m a proud first-time AR owner as well. Went with the Smith & Wesson M&P 15, the base model w/ carrying handle.

My question to you all is this: I’ve concluded I need a railed handguard as my first accessory purchase, and I’m seeking input from your vast collective knowledge:

I’ve somewhat decided I want something longer than the 7 inch carbine standard, but it would need to accommodate the fixed front sight base. I have no experience in whether a free-float model would be worth the extra cost, and unfortunately, I’m on a student budget. Do you all have any suggestions or firsthand experiences to share? I’m open to all lengths, options, brands, etc. Thanks for the time and knowledge.

My Christmas gift!

Just noticed there’s a very similar thread directly beneath mine…

Just take this post as my introduction unless you all really want to give specific advice

Daniel Defense offers several that will accommodate your FSB.
-Lite Rail 9.5 and 12 (Inches) FSP
-Omega X 12 FSP
-RIS II M4A1 FSP
-M4 Rail 9.5 and 12 FSP
All of which require disassembly and re-assembly using their respective barrel nuts.
From what I see on their site, the first 3 types(Lite Rail, Omega X and RIS II), all use the same proprietary barrel nut which comes with the kit and would require their “AR15 Lite Rail Barrel Nut Wrench” to install.
The M4 Rail, again, off their site comes with a different one which requires their “M4 Threaded Ring Spanner Wrench” to install.
I have no personal experience with any of the four systems yet so I cannot comment beyond details taken off their website especially with regards to installation.
I do, however, have their standard Omega and I am very happy with it. DD is top notch, IMHO.
Use the search button. There should be a lot of info from people with experience with each or just email DD. Their customer service is great and quick to respond to any inquiry.

Howdy, mashir.

Congrats on getting your first AR. Before you go spending your money I would suggest that you take a look here and weigh your needs against your wants:

Thank you both for the replies. Very helpful stuff!

There’s this option from Troy, as well, if you’re not interested in what DD is offering:
