I’m sure that this has been done more than once, but I’m new here and I would like your opinion. I’m setting up a rifle for work, not just play. The base rifle is the LMT basic carbine with the LMT rear and fixed front sights. My questions are this, what rail do you guys suggest? Right now its between the Daniel Defense lite rail, or the LaRue. Both 7.0. I was also considering the Omega rail because it only needs basic tools to install. If you do not suggest either, then could you provide me what you think would work best.
As a side question, what light do you suggest? I’m a fan of surefire however, 600 for a VFG light is a bit high, but if its the best then so be it. This is a work gun.
Well you have excellent taste in rails either the Larue or the Daniel Defense are GTG. I personally think the Larue rail is a bit nicer but the Daniel Defense lite rail weighs less. The Omega is very nice as well and easy to install if your worried about that. You’ll be happy with any of those rails.
As far as a weapon light goes I like the Surefire Scout light alot and the X300 is awsome as well. Their VFG light is quite heavy so if your trying to keep weight down the two previous options will work better. Having said that the M900/910 series are very versatile as well as powerful. Browse thriugh some of the pic threads and site sponser sites for some options. Stay Safe
While I think Mr. LaRue makes some of the best stuff around, and I have a 7" rail on one of my carbines. I just don’t see the need for a free floated rail on a work 14.5" or 16" carbine. All my other carbines wear a KAC M4 RAS. They are very well made, lightweight, lock up tight, and are very easy to install. Most of the time all I have on it is a vertical grip and a light.
I have not seen the DD Omega in person yet, but it should work well also.
For a flashlight, I use the LaRue offset mount with a Surefire G2 light. With the new G2 LED you get 80 lumens and 12 hours of run time in a small lightweight light.
For my light, I’m really looking to get at least 100 lumens out of it, I think the G2 is fantastic, but in my experience clearing buildings, the extra lumens make a difference…at least to me.
Anyone else have any input on the rails? I appreciate the above, but it puts me no closer to a decision.
I’ll qualify this: I do not work for Troy Industries, am not a dealer or an armorer. I do live a few miles from Steve Troy, we’ve spoken on the phone, I just finished a multiple thousand dollar Troy Group Buy on Northeastshooters, own the most excellent Troy MCS, BUIS, Sling Mount and a 7" MRF-DI. This is where my suggestion is:
I think for your needs, free-floating is certainly a luxury, with only a little benefit. Not considering a Troy MRF would be leaving you out of an affordable, well-thought, over engineered and easily installed option. Once you install the Troy MRF-DI on your carbine, you’ll be grinning at what a good decision you’ve made and can spend the rest of your dough on ammo.
I’ve seen the Troy forends, and I do think they are nice. I would consider that one, it seems to be a less expensive alternative. I really like the looks of the LaRue and DD models, but I’m dissappointed that the LaRue models do not have a continous rail model…not that it really matters. I want it to look nice also…even though its just a work gun…
I’ve never heard of those lights, could you give me a little back ground and maybe a link to a range report on them? THX.
Well, it seems that from what I’m learning on the LMT vs. Larue irons thread that I will likely change my irons preference which means my rail choice will change. Of course its gonna cost me more money:( .
Looks like I may put Troy flip ups with a longer rail and low profile gas block. What gas blocks will work under a LaRue, DD, and Troy 11" free float rails? I figure that if I’m going to free float and use flip up irons, I might as well add a small amount of length to the sight radius, is that a bad or good idea?
I really like the DD Omega Rails. I now have a 7" and a 9". As you said they go on easy, and really lock up solid. Good price, good product, good people.
I also like running a Surefire G2 or G2L in a VTAC mount ot the top rail. It is light, inexpensive, and works very well. The VTAC mount pulls the light in nice and tight against the rail so it’s closer to the bore, and lower in profile to keep it away from barricades and other obstacles. I really like the looks of VLTOR’s new mount too. It looks like the VTAC but is made of aluminum instead of plastic, but is priced accordingly. Although I have had no durability issues with the VTAC as of yet.
