Quick question

Would it be wrong to get a BCM Middy Upper and have it cut to 14.5 and the FSB shaved?

Would cutting it negate the benefits of the mid-length gas system?

Just wondered. Thanks.

The benefit of a mid-length gas system rests in the modified amount of delay between the time the gas pressure is used solely to accelerate the projectile and when it is diverted to run the action. After the gas is diverted to run the action, the time allotted for that function is dependent on the amount of barrel length AFTER the gas port. Cut it too short, and not enough gas is used for the action, and the rest of the pressure escapes out the muzzle when the bullet is on it’s way. You might find yourself short-stroking.

You know, as many times as I have seen this question, rarely is the actual description of what happens included. Bravo! Exactly why I came to M4C.

If I may add, that doing what you propose has been done by a number of members. Some actually prefer the config you are looking to at.

Additionally, many prominent vendors sell them like that on their rifles be default. Noveske, Sabre, CMMG among barrel makers like Sabre, WhiteOak, etc.

So, while there are potentially ‘risk’ you are not in theory doing anything off the nut.

you can do mid on a 14.5, you’ll just want to have them open the gas port a little. it’ll shoot great.

IIRC, Paul stated the the 14.5" and 16" barrels have the same gas port diameter. Of course you could always email them to verify.

Why dont you just run a 14.5’’ with a carbine gas system and just use a lmt enhanced bcg. You are trying to get a softer recoiling system right?

or try to find a sabre middy 14.5, or if you got $500 for a stainless- noveske

I was trying to capture all the good points of the middie (softer recoil, less harsh on parts, etc.) but in a 14.5 inch package. I thought Noveske’s middies were 16 inch? I will continue my research. Thanks for the info.

Thanks.

Now the million dollar question…when is the last time any of those have been on sale?

In fact, does anyone make a stripped CVM 14.5" Mid gas barrel? Most look like they are stainless.

The only one I have seen is the Sabre one at BCM but no idea if that is ever gonna be available again.

Yep, the more I think of it the chopped BCM middie is the way to go. Hopefully I can get all the pieces when I get home.

I would be a little hesitant simply due to gas port size and limited advantage.
I know that there are several mid-length 14.5 barrels out there, but I do not know what port size is optimal for them.
The reason I mention it is that the port size in a 12.5 gun is different than the port size in a 14.5 gun (with the same CAR system), is different (I think) than a 16 middie. The length of barrel past the port is relevant to proper operation with a certain port size.
The expense of cutting the barrel, potentially opening the port (and facing the possibility of over-sizing the port, negating the benefit of the mid-length system), threading the barrel, and perm-attaching a muzzle device seems excessive given the similar handling characteristics of the 14.5 and 16 inch middie with middie sized rails.

Just my opinion, hopefully someone will come along with good numbers on port sizes.

I understand now. Thanks for the info.
