Will the standard MIAD grip store a spare bolt and firing pin? I see you can buy inserts for different batteries but do you need to buy a separate insert for a bolt?
The standard core holds 3 5.56 cartridges.
I was able to fit either a spare bolt or a spare firing pin, but not both at the same time. I was using the standard 3 bullet insert. Without the insert, it may be possible to get both in.
I have the bolt f pin insert and plan to get more. I’m going to see if I can tape a spare fp retaining pin inside as well.
The medium backstrap feels the best for me.
Where did you find the Bolt/Firing Pin insert? I haven’t seen it listed as an opinion anywhere.

The 3 round insert is standard (although the grips sometimes come through with others)
Optional inserts are 2x123 battery, 2xAA/AAA/N battery, Bolt-FP
(I think the spare FP retaining pin will fit in the tail of the bolt, but I’m not sure as I usually use the battery inserts.)
I bought one of the pre-production grips and it came with a basic insert, an AA/AAA battery holder, a CR123 battery holder, and a bolt/pin carrier.

It’s advertised on the manufacturer’s site, and yes, the grip insert holds both the bolt and firing pin. Why not drop a couple of cotter keys in there while you’re at it?
BigRed and I both run a bolt, firing pin, cam pin, and firing pin retaining pin in a three bullet holder MIAD grip – 100mph taped together.

Production grips are much sturdier
I had a pre-production grip break.
The PP grips have a countersunk attachment screw, the production grips have a fillister head screw. The new version seems much stronger.
The PP grip split down the middle, even though I didn’t over-torque it.
Magpul replaced it (and two others that I didn’t have a problem with) without any hassles.
I bitched about the insert that comes with MIAD on TOS and Rich Fitzpatrick set me straight.
First, the core that comes with the grip holds FIVE rounds: the extra two go bullet end into each small hole.
Next he said, basically, if I was too cheap to buy the spare bolt core, I could remove the soft bullet core and put anything I want in the grip, preferably in a baggie. Having acquired a MIAD with the spare bolt core, I agree with him on his suggestion.
Submariner, in your opinion is the spare bolt insert worth the money?
I have been considering this grip for some time, and if I do follow through on it, I will be getting the bolt insert too.

No, it’s not. I have probably 3 lying around…
But then again, if it’s a concern of yours and you’d like to have a spare bolt or FP and can’t fit them anywhere else, the grip may be a good spot…
After all, you CAN fit batteries in almost everything else which is the core I have been using.
KevinB has the right idea. BTW, I got my MIAD with bolt core for $23 so I didn’t waste money.
Kevin-How do you remove the sticky residue in the field? Have you considered a ziploc bag?

I had to swap out a bolt in a teammates gun last week - worked fine – the residue is not much that a quick gloved wipe does not take care of. I’m not a fan of Ziploc bags since they rip and pins go AWOL.
