Questions on 180gr 40 S&W OAL and over-pressure dangers...

I’ve loaded 40S&W to a cartridge overall length of 1.200” for a Para P16-40. The magazine is long enough, and the bullets don’t stick in the lands at this length.

In theory, the 40S&W headspaces on the case mouth. In reality, headspace is controlled by the extractor in most pistols. Therefore, the length of the case is irrelevant in most pistols, but the cartridge overall length certainly isn’t because that’s what determines how far into the barrel the bullet goes when the cartridge is in the chamber.

Yeah. I had some Precision Delta ammo loaded to 1.18”. I couldn’t figure it out at first. Great ammo after I seated the bullets to standard OAL.

I did have to up the powder charge which makes sense because of the increased case capacity.

I didn’t have problems with bullets in the rifling or pressure or anything else…

My problem, with my Glocks, was feeding… Loading long meant rounds would wedge against the feedramp and chamber as they came out of the mag, instead of feeding.

Yeah. I had some moderately long TNT reloading ammo that I’d use as the top round in every mag until I’d shot it all. I load my own ammo .005” under the 1.140” standard length. That gives me a little buffer against ammo that’s feed fussy.
